Busy early Sunday for SPD on Broadway following reported knifepoint iPhone robbery near Occupy camp

Police were active in the pre-dawn hours around Broadway and Pine Sunday morning after a man reported that a thief stole his iPhone at knifepoint and then ran into the Occupy Seattle camp. The two reports posted to the SPD Blotter blog on the incidents are below. SPD’s brief doesn’t specify if the victim in the iPhone robbery was an Occupy Seattle camper but notes that the suspect was known to the victim. In the second incident nearby later in the morning, two men were arrested carrying illegal weapons following the report of a fight in an alley just off Broadway. Details on both incidents below. Note to the “Broadway Avenue” squeamish — you’ll want to look away. Note x2: While it does seem like Occupy-related items are more likel to make SPD’s blotter, it’s not a case of pure “cherry picking” — the iPhone incident is the only reported robbery incident we’re aware of since Friday.

On November 27th, at approximately 4:17 am, an East Precinct officer was flagged down by a victim in the 1700 Block of Broadway Avenue who stated  that he had been robbed of his i-phone at knife point.  The victim stated that the suspect, who he knew, then ran into the encampment at the community college.   The suspect was described as a white male, 27, with red hair and beard, wearing a black jacket and black pants.  Officers are following up on possible leads.

On November 27th, just before 6:00 am, East Precinct officers were responding to a report of a fight disturbance involving a knife, in the alley just west of the 1500 Block of Broadway Avenue.  Officers contacted three males in the alley.  During the initial contact, as one of the suspects was raising his hands, a large fixed blade knife fell to the pavement.  The 24 year old male was immediately taken into custody.  During a further search of the suspect, another knife and a “slungshot”  were recovered.  Officers determined that a second suspect had an outstanding $10,000 warrant.  That 24 year old male was also arrested.  The third individual was interviewed and released from the scene after his name was checked.

Your pointer in the second incident is indicating the 1400 block. The 1500 block is between Pine and Pike. So the alley just west of Broadway would be the one behind Neighbors.

And for that matter, the other pointer is also wrong. You are indicating the 1700 block of Nagle Place, not Broadway as stated in the police blotter.

Google mapping of the hundred blocks sometimes chooses buildings that correspond to the rounded address. I’ve nudged the placements but, as usual, our pins are approximate and not down to the foot.

For the first time in 30+ years, my car was vandalized Friday night as it sat in my driveway, a few blocks from the OS camp. I have to wonder if someone from the camp did it….maybe, maybe not.

For the first time in a long time, at this very minute the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 2.91% or 327 points. I’m wondering in Occupy Seattle did that. Maybe, maybe not…

I found a discarded candy wrapper on the sidewalk in front of my home. I’m pretty sure it was the occupy campers that did it.

If the iPhone robber ran into the Occupy encampment, why on earth didn’t the victim yell for the campers to help catch the guy? Seems like a crowd of people might be a helpful in this situation.

You guys are correct to be skeptical of Calhoun’s speculation. But I have to say that on Friday night there was a march down Denny by some marchers and they were putting stickers on parked cars as they walked down the street. Admittedly, this is more of an inconvenience than more damaging forms of vandalism, but it can still ruin the paint job on a car, and doesn’t really project a positive image to the rest of the 99%. :)

I expected the skeptical responses to my post, and I do realize that it’s more likely that the vandalism was random and not perpetrated by anyone from OS.

Did you not see the part of my post….”maybe not.”?
