Fire damages 23rd/Republican duplex — UPDATE

Seattle Fire responded to a wall fire in a duplex near 23rd and Republican Wednesday night that damaged one unit and filled the other with smoke. 23rd Ave was closed for nearly an hour between Madison and Mercer during the response.

The blaze at 409 23rd Ave E was reported to 911 just before 11p. There were no reported injuries.

Neighbor Angel provided these details and pictures from the response:

Sad for the tenants – saw the firemen leading them out and they looked to be elderly and possibly disabled, but unhurt.

We’ll update when we hear back from SFD on cause and a damage estimate.

As a neighbor who regularly waits for a bus at that stop, I know there are other occupants (or at least regular visitors) of that duplex. I hope they have a support network for recovering from this.

This morning the yard contained wall materials that had been ripped out, and the smell of burned material still lingered. Very sad, but fortunate that it wasn’t worse.

I was on the 43 when the emergency vehicles blocked the road. I’m glad to hear there were no injuries.
