CHS Pics | Street art, not tagging, on Madison’s Taco Time bricks

Following last snow week’s ugly tagging of Cal Anderson Park, we can understand it if citizens might be a little jumpy about people painting Capitol Hill walls. Earlier today, CHS heard East Precinct radio reports about a man spotted tagging a brick wall near 14th and Madison. Thanks to @GordonWerner, we can tell you this project was an entirely different type of street art:

We’ll check around to see if we can find out anything about the project on the old bricks that were part of the now-demolished Taco Time at the location.

UPDATE: Gordon has posted a stitched version showing the entire wall. Very cool.

I thought there was a Taco Time on Madison that was a well kept secret. Then when I opened the article my hopes and dreams were shattered.

I’m glad they tore down that eyesore of a Taco Time in order to replace it with something nice.

I always said the neighborhood wouldn’t be complete until we had a half asphalt, half brick parking lot that can’t actually be used as a parking lot.

There’s a Taco Bell and a KFC down in lower Queen Anne just beyond that giant needle in the sky.

I think it looks great! More please.
They should also put some picnic table up there too, or maybe a 1/4 pipe for skaters. Something to make it lively and useful to the community.

I thought the exact same thing! I love Rancho Bravo but I wouldn’t mind a bit more variety in my neighborhood mexican fast food!!!

Seriously people? We have several excellent, authentic taquerias on CapHill now, and you wish that Taco Time dog food tripe was back? Bleh. Disgusting.

I’m glad there was for many years a Taco Time so centrally located right across the street from where CCs was. That was before the Hill was taken over by a bunch of hipster food snobs.

I’m surprised to hear that so many people did not know it was there, but maybe that’s one of the reasons that it is gone. Where else in the neighborhood can you go to buy tater tots with hot sauce? Moving to Capitol Hill from Southern California in the early 90’s, looking for Mexican food, this was where I was told to go. Humorous. But still, a local institution. And it did have a great view of downtown.

None of those so-called “authentic” places have Mexi-fries!

This is a refreshing and quite beautiful change from the usual tags and scribbles which constitute 99% of “street art.”

But did the artist have permission from the property owner to do this work? If so, great! If not, it’s not great because it’s illegal, no matter what the quality.

Count me in as someone who super misses the Taco Time. Rancho Bravo is great, but Taco Time is a completely different animal. But I guess I’ll buy anything Pat Cashman tells me to. I’m pretty sure the NW franchise of Taco Times is still locally owned. Maybe we should start a new food revolution resurrecting the fast-food ghosts of Capitol Hill past? Sir Mix-A-Lot would hardly recognize the place…
