In the second such incident in only four days, a pedestrian was struck by a car at 15th Ave and E Denny Way Tuesday night.
Early reports indicated the female victim in her 20s was conscious but suffered arm and leg injuries. She was transported to Harborview. Thanks to Alexander for more details from the scene just after 8p:
FYI, looks like another car vs. pedestrian (or possibly bike, not 100% sure) at 15th and Denny, tonight at around 8pm. SFD sent two ambulances, an engine, and the medic supervisor. It appeared that the person was being transported in the Medic unit, which I believe indicates relatively serious injuries. I hope they are OK.
In an incident Friday afternoon at the same intersection, a woman was struck by a car as she crossed 15th Ave. The driver was evaluated for impairment but does not appear to have been cited. We do not have any updates on the woman’s condition or the extent of her injuries.
Any idea if the people struck were jaywalking? This intersection has an interminably long light with a required button-push for a walk signal (and a super short signal for traffic on Denny if the walk button hasn’t been pushed). I have been guilty of crossing against the light there, but keep it to a very safe minimum since folks tend to drive fast down 15th and it’s not the best lit arterial in town.
We’ll see what more we can find out. I was already looking into the first incident and now there’s even more justification to spend more time on it. Unfortunately, collision reports are tracked at a state level making accessing specific incident information much more difficult.
The timing of the walk signal to cross 15th here is ridiculously long… it invites jaywalking. A pedestrian can only stand at a corner so long before they (rightly) question if the system is functioning, and say “screw it”.
I was hit by a car on Bellevue and Pine St. ten years ago. The man who hit me was trying to beat an on coming car so he could turn left. I was in the cross walk and didn’t stand a chance. Sheesh, is anybody that busy that they risk someone’s life to get some place a few minutes earlier.
what kind of suburbia hellhole intersection is this, that requires pushing a button for pedestrians to cross? It’s no pedestrian-only crossing, why not time the crosswalks with the lights like everywhere else worth living in this region?
That same ridiculously long light impacts a driver waiting at that light too. Which of course is no excuse for the driver.
It’s that time of year…it’s really hard to see pedestrians sometimes, even when you’re paying attention. Especially with the drizzle, and the tendency for everyone to wear so much dark clothing.
I rode up on my bike less than a minute after it happened. The pedestrian was still on the ground and had a pretty good sized bump on her head, but she was conscious. From where she was it appeared that she had stepped out from behind a parked car and was not in the crosswalk. Looks like she forgot to look left before crossing the street.
2 accidents in a week? How can we put pressure on WSDOT to analyze this crossing?
Perhaps you mean SDOT
Unless the driver is on a big wheel they are not impacted, there is a metal detecting ring at that intersection to detect a vehicle. (those cutouts aren’t scales as many think).
Send SDOT an email or call them. I and others around Boylston and Pine have written to SDOT about the speeding and absolute disregard for others’ safty that many drivers present at that intersection. Though many neighbors have sent in complaints, SDOT won’t put in a stop sign or a yield sign or a sidwalk bulb or anything for one simple reason – They haven’t witnessed any major pedestrian/driver collisions at that intersection (countless near misses and a non-major incidences don’t count apparently – I’ve witnessed two bicyclist get hit by cars at that intersection in 2 years. They were able to walk away though). Since these two things happened within four days and both warranted an aid response, you might have some luck on having SDOT improve lighting or something.
Good luck.
