Fire at the El Capitan puts residents out in the cold

Residents of the El Capitan apartment building were evacuated into the freezing cold night as firefighters dealt with a fire reported at the building at the base of Capitol Hill just above I-5 Wednesday night.

Here’s one report from a resident:

The fire was dealt with quickly but @tournant and others reported being unable to return home for at least an hour following the response to the 8:34p callout. UPDATE: Sounds like the situation was taken care of much faster than we originally understood with residents able to get back inside in under 30 minutes. With temperatures in the 20s, many sought refuge with friends in the area.

We’re still gathering details on the small fire and will update when we have more on the situation. UPDATE: See comments for unconfirmed details on the fire.

  1. a candle was left burning on the fourth floor, it spread up a wall but did not make it further. fire dept responded quickly and we were able to get back inside within about 20 minutes.

  2. Thanks to my neighbors and SFD for saving us all from a dramatically shitty and cold evening! (except for my candle-burning neighbor; obvs.)

  3. I’m glad it was minimal, I lived there for years as well #412. That building was the Island of Misfit Toys and Al Hendricks has to be one of the greatest souls on this planet.
