Blotter | Broadway wine assault and robbery, Safeway diaper scuffle, Convention Place stand-off

Consider this your anti-Valentine. Here is the latest from the streets of the East Precinct:

  • Man gets hit in head, loses bottle to wine thief: Police and medics were called to Broadway and Harrison just before noon Monday to a report of a man bleeding from his head after being hit with a full wine bottle. According to police, the man was exiting the nearby QFC with a bottle of wine when he was attacked by another man who grabbed the bottle and swung it, knocking the victim in the head. The attacker fled the scene with full bottle of wine in tow. A witness dialed 911 to report the attack. Seattle Fire treated a man in his 50s at the scene for a head wound before he was transported by private ambulance to the emergency room. Police say the victim was extremely intoxicated. The suspect was described as a black male wearing a tan three-quarter length jacket. He was last seen walking north on Broadway with the bottle of wine.

  • 23rd/Madison diaper scuffle: A 24-year-old man was detained by Safeway security Monday night just after 5p after being observed trying to leave the store at 23rd and Madison with packs of diapers. He was handed over to SPD and booked into jail for investigation of robbery thanks to a scuffle with security that escalated the situation from simple shoplifting. There were no signficant injuries.
  • Broke the bottle he was holding‘ to create a makeshift weapon, then drank from the broken glass’ — A man was arrested and booked into King County Jail for investigation of burglary after this rather outrageous break-in at the Convention Center late last Tuesday. The full SPD narrative on the arrest is below. While we’re not fans of police blotter reporter that seems to revel in cases of clear mental illness, there are examples like this where the human spirit shines through regardless of the circumstances. We hope this man gets the help he needs and are glad to report that nobody was seriously injured.

Not to condone assault in any way….but damn, how bad off are things when feel like you have to shoplift diapers? I sort of feel bad for the guy, in a way.

A sale to an “extremely intoxicated” man? That’s against the law. I cant wait until QFC gets hard liquor!

and knowing the assholes who run security at that Safeway, they started the entire thing knowing this fellow would fight back and they could try and get him for robbery and assault.

“and knowing the assholes who run security at that Safeway, they started the entire thing knowing this fellow would fight back and they could try and get him for robbery and assault.”

Do the same people run security at the 15th Ave Safeway? I once called the cops on what turned out to be security there because of the way they escalated (what I have to assume was) a shoplifting situation.
