Fire department recruits training on to-be-demolished Capitol Hill home this week

The last time CHS visited this empty old home at 18th and Olive it had just been cleared of squatters. On Tuesday, we found these Seattle Fire Department recruits taking a lunch break. Seattle Fire’s Kyle Moore fills us in on what’s happening:

This week, Seattle Fire Department Recruits will be practicing putting out home fires at a vacant house on Capitol Hill.

Starting Tuesday April 17 and lasting through Friday April 20, recruits will be putting their 13 weeks of fire training to practice.  Seattle Fire Department training instructors will light wooden pallets on fire inside the home located in the 1700 block of 18th Avenue.  The recruits will practice various home fire scenarios.

The owner of the 2-story home donated the structure for the Fire Department’s use.

The Fire Training will last from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City records show a permit on file for the dilapidated structure to be demolished. In the meantime, it’s taking some abuse for a good cause.

1700 block Summit apartment fire
Meanwhile, crews responded to a real fire emergency early Wednesday morning just after midnight and found light smoke coming from an apartment building in the 1700 block of Summit. Once inside, crews found the smoke was coming a burnt meal inside one of the units.
