A Pride list for Capitol Hill lads and ladies who brunch

Wafflescape, originally uploaded by sea turtle.

Let’s not beat around the bush. Much of Pride is a great big party — here’s our roster of the 2012 Capitol Hill fun. And great big parties require brunch. Capitol Hill does the party thing pretty well and, of course, we do a pretty good job with brunch, too. Most Saturdays and Sundays lines form outside Linda’s for cuisine like their Cowgirl Tacos and drinks like their bloody marys with, who knows — maybe a piece of buffalo jerky thrown in along with the pickled green beans. Glo’s on E Olive Way is another brunch institution, B&O Espresso across the street, likewise. Here’s a look at some of your prime Capitol Hill brunch options for Pride.

One Capitol Hill Pride brunch of note on Saturday is also a comedy show: The Hair of the Bear Brunch and Comedy Show, at CC Attie’s on E Olive Way. The show features Emmett Montgomery, Abbey Drake, Rick Taylor, Leah Mansfield, and it will be hosted by Derek Sheen. Brunch starts at 11:30AM, and the show starts at 12:15. The comedy is free, but it is $10 for the meal.

Another worthy Pride brunch  is the Boozy Drag Brunch at Lobby Bar on East Pike. It will be a continental breakfast, and there is no cover. It will be held in conjunction with the Absolut Garden Party at the same location. (BBQ, kiddie pool, outdoorsy fun.)

There is an Official Pride brunch. It’s on Sunday morning downtown. The Pre-Parade Brunch will be held at the Hard Rock Cafe starting at 8AM. Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets. (10 dollars for kids under 12 years of age, and adult tickets are 25 dollars.)

There are a number of convenient brunch options on Broadway itself, if you’d like to keep things in one area for Saturday’s Capitol Hill Pride Festival and other Hill festivities. Julia’s will be serving brunch inside all day, as well as grilling outside in the beer garden. They’ll also have cast members from RuPaul’s Drag Race and local female impersonators. Down the street there’s The Grill on Broadway, whose brunch hours may be extended a bit on Saturday past the usual 10AM to 3PM. Charlie’s Bar and Grill will be serving breakfast starting at 9AM, with drink specials. Similarly, the DeLuxe serves standard breakfast fare Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM to 3PM. if you’d like to go a tad more outside the norm, Americana will be serving brunch from 9AM to 3PM, with items like maple glazed pork belly and gluten-free corned beef hash. That’s five brunch options within a few blocks — brunch density.

Up the Hill on 15th there’s 22, which serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays with menu items like crab cakes benedict and build your own omelettes. There’s the Coastal Kitchen, serving breakfast from 8AM to 3PM Saturdays and Sundays with the tasty yet ominously-titled “rumbles,” and the always popular griddle cakes. Further up the Hill on 19th Kingfish Cafe boasts Bourbon Street bread pudding, chicken and waffles, and grits. Kingfish is open for brunch from 10AM to 2PM Saturdays and Sundays.

Over in the Pike/Pine corridor, newbie Saint John’s tells us they’ll be serving their brunch 10a-3p for the weekend while the Unicorn offers items as diverse as Lucky Charms  (the children’s cereal) Chicken and Waffle Roll-ups, and a wide range of specialty cocktails. Oddfellows offers brunch on the weekends from 9AM to 3PM with dishes like beignets w/ jam and oatmeal, as well as select lunch items. Bill’s Off Broadway also offers brunch on the weekends, between 10AM and 2PM. Their fare is inexpensive by Hill standards, and the menu is large.

With the abundance of options and the players providing the goods for extended hours to celebrate the weekend and cater to the large and hungry crowds on Capitol Hill, Pride brunch is a tradition. Plus, you’ll need your sustenance for the parades and and parties.

KEXP and The 5 Point Present

THE 2012 KEXP PRIDE PARTY AND PIG ROAST

Sunday, June 24th in Tilikum Place park

Celebrate Seattle Pride KEXP-style in 2012! This year on Sunday, June 24, the station “Where The Music Matters” is joining forces with the legendary 5 Point Café for a day-long party in historic Tilikum Place park—right at the end of the annual Pride Parade route and right in front of The 5 Point. The event features a soundtrack provided by KEXP DJs, a beer garden with full cash bar, and a pig roast!

Music kicks off at 11:00am with DJ El Toro, and continues into the evening with sets by Riz, Larry Rose, and Mel. The good folks from The 5 Point Cafe will be spit-roasting three whole hogs (starting at noon), served with baked beans and coleslaw. Pints of Manny’s and Lucille IPA, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and assorted cocktails will be available at the beer garden.

Party admission is FREE. Plates for the pig roast are $15 apiece. Cash bar with drink specials throughout the day. 21+ only, please.
