Summer 2012 means more wade pool hours in Seattle — 6 Capitol Hill + CD places to play

It is time again to release the children of Capitol Hill to splash around in their beloved shallow pools of water. No, we don’t mean sending them on a walk outside — wading pool season has arrived. Sunshine seems to spawn lists — the full roster of Capitol Hill and area wading pools and splash parks is below. Note that even though it’s opening weekend for some, drizzle often means the pools are closed. If life gives you lemons, put your swim trunks on anyhow and get out there and play. Happy Seattle summer.

Wading pool season in Seattle this year comes with the help of a couple sponsors whose donations have added 40 days to the wading pool schedule including some crucial weekend openings on Saturday and Sunday. While Capitol Hill’s pools at Volunteer Park and Cal Anderson didn’t receive any direct sponsorship to extend hours, Central District News reports that the Powell Barnett Park wading pool will be operating on Saturdays thanks to the support of Ask.com, who are sponsoring pools in Wallngford and Queen Anne as well.

“We’ve shifted our marketing focus to a highly-targeted local strategy and Seattle continues to be a top market for us, especially when it comes to connectivity on mobile devices,” said Valerie Combs, a  spokesperson at Ask.com. “We want to show the community a little love and while we can’t permanently do away with those 520 bridge tolls or promise more sunshine, we can make their days a little easier.”

The city will open wading pools if the temperature is scheduled to rise above 70 degrees. On most days the city plans to fill the pool halfway to conserve water, but on the busiest days they promise to top the pools off.

Below is a comprehensive Capitol Hill and Central District wading pool schedule. Wade wisely, and remember, no bare buns allowed:

  • Cal Anderson Park (1635 11th Ave) will be open 6/29-8/19 on Fri-Sun from Noon-6:45pm
  • Volunteer Park (1400 E Galer St) will be open 6/23-9/3 daily from 11 am-8pm
