A woman told police an opportunistic burglar made off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, gold coins and handbags in a Friday June 1st burglary at her Montlake home. According to the SPD report on the incident, the woman was away from the residence in the 2400 block of 19th Ave E for all of five hours on a Friday night when the break-in occurred. Police found evidence of a forced entry involving a fire extinguisher. The SPD report on the incident is below.

I want to know what $40,000 earrings look like. Sheeshh. Why didn’t she keep these things in a safe?
Sure, she might have been burgled, but if someone has 80K worth of jewelry just lying around a) they have an alarm system b) they have a safe. Simple as that. Sorry for your loss, but really??
Jewelry adds up folks. I have my wife’s wedding ring insured for close to 40 grand. I don’t have a bodyguard following her around. She has other jewelry too. We don’t have a safe or anything special in our house. It is all insured tho.
Boy, lots of sympathy here. Bet you guys are great when your friends are in crisis. Damn her for owning expensive jewelry in the first place! Doesn’t she know people like the steal valuable things?
You must be new. It’s not a real CHS post unless 2/3rds of the comments are blaming the victim. Especially in the case where somebody has something expensive damaged/burgled. In a neighborhood where a lot of people’s most expensive possession is their $120 pawnshop-bought guitar, they have no concept of what it’s like to own something of real value.
That said, unless you’re wearing $40K earrings on the regular, why would you not have them in a safe? And how do you “forget” about a pair of $40K earrings?
I’m sorry, but the comment above is border line and mean spirited. I have respected for every person I see on the street rich or poor. Life is hard and short. But my hundred dollar pawn shop guitar means more to me than any mundane material object; especially a set of rocks and metal. Such great wealth inequality is bound to create friction in a society. From my current stand point I could never see my self spending 40k on any single object, it seems so excessive. But the moral of the story is to buy a fucking safe.
No one deserves to be burglarized, but it’s too bad the woman didn’t have a little common sense. Sure, own $80,000 worth of jewelry if you want (although it seems a bit decadent to me), but for god’s sake protect it by storing it in a safe. Otherwise, if it’s just laying around your house, that’s asking for trouble.
All these comments about putting it in a safe. Make sure it is a giant safe or secure it an unbelievably difficult way to the floor otherwise the burglars will thank you for putting it all in one nice convenient place that they can open later.
Were is the love she is the victim you no…You should be able to keep all you stuff safe at without the scum bag stealing it …They be caught before and are just system has let them out time and time again to steal….
