CHS has reported on the various changes to Capitol Hill shopping center the Broadway Market over recent months following the spring 2011 announcement of a $14.7 million investment in the facility. In the time since, some smaller tenants have left, some larger tenants have made plans to expand, and Broadway Market has some fancy new marketing tools like a website offering stories about food and fashion trends, and a Twitter feed.
But that feed didn’t say anything about this new white wall that showed up in front of the old, long-emptyHot Topic space on Broadway.
We get the feeling we may not have the entire story on coming changes to the shopping center. We have calls out to Broadway Market management to see if we can learn more.
But, in the meantime, what do you think the wall is for?

…BECU expanding?
Pure speculation, but… A few months ago when QFC was remodeling, a friend of mine (who is a QFC employee, but not at the Broadway store) told me that they were going to expand the bakery and deli into that space to make more room on that side (which is really crowded). But their remodel came and went and no expansion, so I assumed that they had scrapped the plan. Maybe not.
As for the BECU expansion, that is taking the space vacated by the Greek restaurant.
BECU is expanding, but this wall is actually on the opposite side of the hallway where BECU is going. The former location of Gyro World is still open and accessible, and that’s where BECU is going.
I don’t know, but I assume that BECU is expanding into the Gyro space?
BECU is expanding, they’ll even gain a window to Republican St. They’ll also gain their own bathrooms, they won’t have to use the shooting galleries on the second floor. The shoe repair shop is moving approximately 15 feet to the west, and the front space that was previously Hot Topic, The Flower Shop, and The Espresso stand, as well as most of the corridor, will become Wells Fargo Bank. A new corridor from Broadway will lead to the elevators and stairs to the garage and second floor.
In other words, nothing too spectacular. I hope the owners invest in strong glass that is hard to break. Banks are so popular on Broadway right now.
I seem to remember an announcement a year or more ago that the new management was going to change the parking to an honor system with no validation required. Does that sound familiar anyone? I’ve searched the CHS site and can’t find the reference so it is entirely possible I dreamed it since they are putting in an automated payment system now.
As far as the temp wall goes, my guess is QFC is absorbing the tiny coffee/tea space.

Putting the QFC in Broadway Market was a huge mistake. It’s not a fun experience shopping and relying on an elevator to do your shopping. QFC should have found a way to be part of the Broadway Building where QFC was formerly. Two level QFC is a big fail.
Parking at Harvard Market is free 90 minute parking in the garage and 30 minute free parking in the open air lot above. Not honor system as attendants regularly check the lot.

The old Hot Topic entrance is to be the main north entrance into the building. That will allow for more square rentable spaces. BECU is enlarging with some window on Republican. Then the shoe repair, then a big Wells Fargo branch. South of the entrance in the old Hot Topic Space is to be a T-Mobile store. Wow…just what we need.

Really DPT? You are criticizing her for the Pike/Pine trick? And I suppose you NEVER use an umbrella because of what other people might think of you.
Even Seattle natives I know still don’t have it straight. After 15 years here I still sometimes use “Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Pressure” to remember the street order downtown.
Sadly, one need look no further than the “repairs” made to the sidewalks around the Broadway Market to get a sense of the commitment the owners have to the neighborhood and the “pride” they take in their building. Other than collecting rent and shipping it back to Cincinnati, Ohio or wherever they are located, it does not appear that the owners care the least bit about the impact of their building on the neighborhood or about their neighbors who happen to support their building by shopping there. When are they going to wake up ?
I have never seen such careless, sloppy, and insensitive work in my life and I have been up in this neighborhood a long, long time.
This kind of carelessness tells me and everyone else here that other than collecting rent checks, they don’t care at all about their neighbors, the neighborhood, or even the customers they serve.
