Capitol Hill’s Living Room has a new (Brooklyn) buyer

There are more nightlife changes ahead for lower E Olive Way. Thursday night, electronic music fans — and fans of a comfortable couch or two — will say goodbye to The Living Room as the bar closes down just shy of its third birthday.

Opened by artist Monika Proffitt on Halloween 2009 in the former home of Spencer Moody’s first Anne Bonny, remaining owner Robert Roach’s move to New York sealed the bar’s eventual fate, manager Joan Trower tells CHS. She says Thursday’s “go out with a bash” last night of business will feature many of the DJs that have made the small E Olive Way bar a popular place for mixes and mixed drinks. Back in 2010 when things like Groupon were still a novelty, we noted the Living Room’s “deal” celebrating its first birthday.

Trower said part of the Living Room’s appeal as a DJ hangout was its intimate layout and position as an alternative to the typical club settings associated with electronic music.

There is no word on when the space will re-open with new ownership, a new name and a new way of doing things. We’re told an East Williamsburg bar owner with some Seattle roots is coming back to town and will take over the space. He’ll soon neighbor John John’s Game Room, the pinball and arcade bar slated to fill the dearly departed Faire’s space in the same building.

Trower said she’s not sure what’s next for her after cleaning up and moving out on Friday.

In the end, she said the Living Room lived up to its name. “It was intended to serve as a living room for the community and for people who live here in smaller apartments,” she said. “It was pretty laid back.”

The Living Room was one of my favorite places to chill for the last year…hopefully the new owners are able to retain the calm and friendly atmosphere. Was sad to hear over the weekend that it was closing.

We can’t let the people that are trying to make this community grow collapse. I’m no better then the rest of you. We should make it a point to get #$cked at all the bars
