The Seattle University community will remember Dr. Sue Schmitt, a professor and former dean of the College of Education, in a memorial Monday at 18th Ave’s Immaculate Conception Church:
Sue Schmitt, Ed.D., Professor and former dean of the College of Education, died suddenly at the age of 66 on September 28, 2012. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 8 at 4 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church at 1820 18th Avenue. A reception will follow on campus.
Dr. Schmitt stepped down from her 16-year position as dean on July 31, 2012, and spent the past two months traveling and enjoying time with her family. In her announcement to the faculty and staff on June 26, Dr. Schmitt emphasized her joy in overseeing many historical events over the past 16 years and was excited about the college’s position to engage in new opportunities at the university, state and national levels.
The school credits Schmitt with restructuring the university’s doctoral program and leading the planning around the Seattle U’s 75th anniversary celebration.

Assuming you had retired after a full and accomplished career, it’s sad you didn’t have more time to enjoy traveling and being with your family. But it’s a very good thing you had several months to do so.
