Blotter | Rash of street robberies includes another knock-out mugging

The holidays appear to be coinciding with a rash of street crime around the Hill. We’ve reported on small swarms of street robberies in the past but the past few months and the summer on Capitol Hill were relatively quiet. To balance our coverage of anecdotal crime reports, CHS also publishes periodic updates on the area’s crime statistics as reported by SPD. Our last major update in July featured a look at the 2011 totals for the area — including a more than 6% year over year drop in reported robberies.

  • Another knock-out mugging: A just-released police report details what appears to be another instance of a victim being jumped from behind, beaten and robbed around the Pike/Pine nightlife district. According to the report on the early-morning November 24th attack, a man was severely beaten after he was jumped while walking on E Pine just after 3 AM:

The victim was found lying on the ground unconscious and was transported to the hospital “due to the serious nature of his injuries,” according to the report.

While police have not said the attacks are related, the violent street robbery was the third of its kind reported in recent weeks. On November 11th, a man was jumped from behind and robbed as he cut through Seattle Central. The next day, this incident in the 1800 block of Broadway sent its victim to the hospital. The Broadway victim’s mother tells CHS her son required surgery for a broken jaw from the attack.

  • Two more street robberies reported: CHS has also learned of at least two more street robberies around Pike/Pine in the same period. Two early-morning robberies — one on November 18th and the other on November 28th — targeted women and also used physical pain to get the job done. The victim in the November 18th attack suffered a concussion, bruised ribs and stitches after she was knocked down and robbed as she was walking to her car on Boylston, according to her friend who notified CHS of the incident. The same friend also alerted us to the account of the November 28th incident on Facebook. “Two guys in black hoodies and one with navy dickies and the other with black dickies tried to mug me – ONE of them socked me in the face just hitting my fucking lip – I was in heels and I fucking went nutz- they ran off and I now without bag/phone/id and a fat lip,” the victim wrote about the incident.
  • Gunpoint robbery: November 18th also saw a man report being held up at gunpoint at 13th and Union:

  • Police search for Honda getaway car: The street robbery activity continued this weekend with two events near Seattle University reportedly involving the same vehicle — a white or silver Honda four-door sedan:

Seattle University Department of Public Safety has confirmed with Seattle Police two incidents of strong-arm robbery, which occurred in the past 48 hours, near 12th & E. Jefferson. The first incident occurred at approximately 11PM, Thursday night (11/29). Victim reported the suspect tore his necklace from his neck. The second incident occurred at approximately 11:30 PM last night, Friday (11/30), unknown what was taken.  There were multiple male suspects reported by the victims, with very limited descriptive information. Both victims gave a very similar suspect vehicle description, which was described as a Honda four-door sedan, silver or white in color. Responding Seattle Police officers searched the area in both incidents, and no suspect vehicle, or suspects, were located.

  • Sunday night hold-up: The university also briefed its campus on this Sunday night robbery involving an “implied” weapon:

At approximately 5:30 PM this evening, December 2nd, Seattle University Department of Public Safety monitored Seattle Police Department response to a report of an armed robbery-weapon implied, never seen.  The incident occurred at 13th & E. Spring (one block east of campus).  The victim, not affiliated with the university, reported to police that a male suspect approached him from behind and said he had a gun, and demanded the victim’s messenger carry bag. The suspect ran eastbound from the scene. The victim described the suspect as a white male, in his early 20s, approximately 6’0,” and 175 lbs, with some facial hair, and wearing all dark clothing, including a black knit cap and gloves. The victim reported the suspect smelled of alcohol. Responding police officers are continuing to investigate, and the suspect has not been located.

There was also a robbery yesterday (Sunday 12/2) on the corner of Pine and Summit. Same scenario, someone asked my acquaintance for a light and was sucker punched from behind by another guy. It seemed that this was a pair of guys as well. I would love to see more police patrols around the Pine/Summit/Belmont area. Be safe people, take out your head phones, be aware of your surroundings!

Again, at the corner of Pine and Summit, around 5:30am Saturday 12/1, a man was screaming for help and asking anyone to call the police. I dialed 911 and the dispatcher confirmed that they received a high volume of calls and that police offers were on scene. I couldn’t see what was going on, but the sustained screaming was enough to wake me up (not usually a light sleeper).

Any chance you could find out what happened? It sounded like he was saying he had been stabbed, in between cries for someone to call the police….

Why is the race of the suspect mentioned in only one of the stories? It’s strange that in the other they can describe the vehicile in great detail but not the suspects.
