Blotter | Harvard Ave squatters, prog metal band burgled

  • Harvard Ave squatters: Harvard Ave E was filled with police cars Tuesday night around 9:30 after a man reported he heard “an unknown amount of people upstairs walking around” in a residence that was supposed to be empty.

According to the report, the 300 block building is undergoing a remodel and the man doing the work lives there while the work is being completed. Tuesday night, he called police after hearing the unwanted visitors upstairs. The report notes that one responding officer “recognized this address from previous calls.”

Police arrived and took one man into custody who had emerged from inside:

Police did a search of the building and removed six more people. All were transported to East Precinct where they were interviewed and released. The report notes that police have recommended a trespassing charge against the first man who exited the building when police arrived.

  • Belmont Ave E burglary: This band took to Reddit to look for help recovering items stolen in a January 25th Capitol Hill apartment burglary. The SPD report on the incident notes officers found pieces of latex gloves that were likely used to prevent fingerprints during the burglary.
  • Check and Japanese Yen burglary: The Reddit rip-off was one of two reported break-ins in the area that night. Thousands of dollars in checks, silver bars, Japanese yen and decorative antiques were stolen from a condo unit that same Friday, according to police. Police say someone forcefully entered the condo, which is also used as a business, in the 900 block of Summit Avenue East and stole the items including a laptop, prescription pills and $36,000 of endorsed checks. Police collected fingerprints, but neither the owner nor employee have any suspicions about who may have committed the burglary, according to police.
  • If you missed the updates, SPD made two major arrests of robbery suspects believed by police to have been involved in recent Capitol Hill hold-ups:
