The local celebration of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. will cross our Capitol Hill and coincide with Washington D.C.’s second inauguration of Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president. Expect a parade, a viewing party — and free parking plus reduced transit schedules on Monday.

King’s legacy of social justice will be celebrated in the annual march from Garfield High School to the Federal Building downtown, Monday. The rally will start at 9:30 AM and the march will start moving toward downtown via Capitol Hill at 11. The theme of the rally and march is Let Freedom Ring!

Monday morning, you can celebrate the start of Obama’s second term in the highest office in the land with a free viewing party at Town Hall Seattle:

Now that the broadcast schedule for the 2013 Inauguration ceremony has been published, Town Hall has planned its traditional community viewing party accordingly. And while we can’t match the record crowd of 1.8 million who attended Barack Obama’s 2009 Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C., we can offer the next best thing inthis Washington: a free Seattle party complete with celebratory atmosphere, big-screen coverage, and coffee and light breakfast items for purchase. The theme for the 2013 Inauguration is “Faith in America’s Future,” commemorating the country’s perseverance and unity, and marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol Dome. Our celebration, in our own grandly domed Great Hall, begins at 8 a.m., giving you time to snack, chat, and settle in for the 8:30-9 a.m. call to order, invocation, and swearing-in of Joseph Biden as Vice President, followed by Obama’s encore swearing-in as President of the United States and his second inaugural address. Meanwhile, Friday brought the annual Seattle Community Colleges MLK celebration to 19th and Madison’s Mt. Zion. With the Mount Zion Gospel Choir behind him, actor Jim Lucas chronicled “the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of Dr. King during his twelve years as a Civil Rights leader” with a spirited crowd — and a handful of dignitaries — on hand to sing along.
