Thursday, January 16

  • Cheap Wine and Poetry features poets Alex Bleecker, Rachel Kessler, John W. Marshall, and Janie Miller. An open mic follows the readers, and wine is a buck per cup. We’re always game for a little culture on the cheap.  Richard Hugo House, 7p.
  • Learn about Small and Simple grants in this workshop.
  • Bainbridge Island writer Tom Kelly reads from Cold Crossover, a northwest-based mystery novel. Does the author’s name sound familiar? Perhaps you read the  real estate section of the Seattle Times sometime in 20 years. Elliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
  • This month, The History Cafe meeting  moves from the Hill into their snazzy new cafe at Museum of History and Industry. (Not too far for Hillites.) January’s topic is Beat Poets with a discussion of beat poet influences in the area plus  a screening of the short documentary on Jack Kerouac’s time in the North Cascades.   • Bye Bye Birdy continues through Sunday at Broadway Performance Hall, 7p.
  • T(our) Literary Magazine Reading Party with DJ Erin. T(our) is a literary and artistic dialogue about experiences in and about the LGBTQ community. January’s theme: A Fresh Start. Vermillion, 7p

Friday, January 18

  • Secret Show #1 Fhysical Graffiti runs Fridays and Saturdays through February. A complete visual, music and dance experience with arial performances and Visual art installations by street artists Weirdo, Baso Fellini and NKO plus a rotating roster of DJs and dance party. It appears to be a semi-private event: you need to RSVP with a name of a cast member or event organizer. The list is long, you probably know someone. Fred Wildlife Refuge, 10p.
  • Actor Jim Lucas will portray Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 18, starting at noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1634 19th Ave. This 39th annual celebration is sponsored by Seattle Community Colleges. Free and open to the community.”
  • Annameekee Hesik reads from her novel The You Know Who Girls: Freshman Year, a coming of age story with positive images of lgbt youth. Elliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
  • Undo, a dark comedy about a couple’s divorce, opens at Annex Theatre and runs through February 15th.

Saturday, January 19

  • Urban Vanish, aka glow in the dark capture the flag, returns to the streets and parks of Capitol Hill. Meet at 11th and E Howell/Cal Anderson Park, 6p.
  • Learn how to make a dish from the French Alps at Paris Eastside. $80
  • Longtime journalist Joe Bianco shares stories from his memoir The Story Never Ends: A Memoir of a Newspaper Reporter. Eliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
  • The formidable Sarah Vaughn entertains you for one day only in a digital rebroadcast of a 1-hour performance in 1969. Fly me to the moon! Northwest Film Forum, 8p.

Sunday, January 20

  • Take a walk to visit Louisa Boren Overlook or the owls of Interlaken.
  • Peoples Grand Opera performs The Public Road a collaborative community-sourced singing project featuring the writings of Walt Whitman and original songs. Frye Art Museum, 1:30 – 2p.
  • 1550 Supper Club rings in the new year with an authentic Mexican dinner of traditionally inspired dishes with a twist. Also featuring regionally inspired music and beverage selected to compliment the menu. Arabica Lounge (1550 E Olive Way), 7 – 11p.
  • 13th Annual Expansions MLK Celebration: join KEXP, Masa, Kid Hops, and DJ Riz at Q Nightclub, 8p to close.
