SPD releases photo of man detectives say is fake cop robbing people in Volunteer Park

Police have posted this picture of a man detectives believe is behind recent robberies in Volunteer Park involving a man pretending to be a police officer. CHS posted this account from one victim with details of his run-in with the phony cop.

SPD is asking anybody with information to contact robbery detectives.

Detectives need the public’s help finding a man suspected of posing as a police officer in Volunteer Park in order to rob unsuspecting park-goers.

Detectives believe 46-year-old Ryan Purdy (AKA Tracy Byers) approached several people in Volunteer Park in December, flashed a gold badge, implied he was a police officer, and took cash and credit cards from his victims.

If you have information which could help detectives locate Purdy, please contact the SPD Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5535 or call 911. Detectives are also asking for anyone who may have had contact with Purdy in the park to contact SPD.

A SPD spokesperson declined to specify how detectives identified Purdy’s possible involvement. UPDATE: SPD tells CHS detectives received an anonymous tip about the man’s possible involvement and a witness was able to identify his photo as the cop impersonator encountered in Volunteer Park.
