Sunday march against gun violence starts at Westlake

As the political process around more serious changes to the country’s gun laws moves forward, another community effort to call for change is taking place in Seattle. Sunday afternoon brings the StandUp Washington rally and march against gun violence:

A rally to remember the victims of Sandy Hook and encourage state legislators to ban semi-automatic assault weapons, sponsored by Washington Ceasefire.

Speakers include Mayor Mike McGinn, State Senator Ed Murray, Washington Education Association President Mary Lindquist, the Interfaith Amigos, Rev. Sanford “Sandy” Brown and CeaseFire Board President Ralph Fascitelli.

Josephine Howell, The Raging Grannies and Seattle Peace Chorus will also perform.

The event begins at 1:30 PM at Westlake Park with the march slated to end at Seattle Center.

Earlier this week, Seattle and county officials announced a re-launch of a gun buy-back program for the area. Tens of thousands of dollars in donations have come in after the announcement to support the program’s goals of community involvement and getting rid of hundreds of unnecessary firearms.
