We’re pretty sure it won’t transform Seattle into an “international arts destination” by this summer but a project — and cool opportunity for artists — has been hatched to create four large-scale murals on Capitol Hill buildings.

“Our overall goal is to help establish Seattle as an international arts destination similar to cities like Berlin, Rio de Janeiro, London, São Paulo New York and Miami which are well known for their street arts,” according to the project website, Stunning Seattle.

Perhaps due to our strong rankings in this “who’s who in America’s arty neighborhoods, all of the planned Stunning Seattle mural locations will be on Capitol Hill:

  1. Shop Rite @ 426, 15th Ave E on the north facing wall (65 feet x 30 feet)
  2. Union Art Coop @ 1100 E Union St. on the north facing wall (125 feet x 80 feet)
  3. SJW Studios @ 1424, 10th Ave on the south facing wall (80 feet x 45 feet)
  4. The Pike Building @ 1000 E Pike St on the east facing wall (90 feet x 45 feet)

Artists who want to create the large-scale works are invited to apply through May 15. Submissions will be reviewed for community and property owner acceptance, and final selections will be judged through online voting by June 1.

For inspiration, check out some of these recent mural projects on the Hill — here, here, here and here. We’re also intrigued by the posibilites inherent in the Shop Rite project that will face the hippie-tastic mural across the street on the side of Walgreens

Winning artists will receive $3,000 from the City of Seattle, along with paint, materials and equipment to complete their designs.  The project is funded by a City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods matching fund grant.

Although I agree that this isn’t going to make Seattle an “international arts destination” overnight, I do think that incremental steps like this can add up. I think anything that helps to diversify our high tech persona is a good thing and supporting a variety of arts programs is a great step for any city that wants be be more grown up and international.

I LOVE the hippie-tastic mural on the side of Walgreens. One of my favorites. :)

I LOVE this! The murals will actually be real art and will enhance our neighborhood greatly……so much better than tag graffiti and the increasingly annoying stickers, which are unfortunately what pass for “street art” in our neighborhood.

Permissible in Twitter and occasional headlines. Can’t judge muralists
