For Golazo, a soccer-inspired start-up specializing in energy drinks, regulation time expired a while ago on their lease at the old BMW building on E Pike. They’

ve been on extra time for months and it appears that clock could soon run out.

“We’ve been on a month to month basis. But the minute they get their demolition permit, we’re out,” Golazo co-founder Alex Rosenast told CHS.

Golazo has been keeping the old BMW space active for the developers the Wolff Company who are planning to tear down part of the former car dealership between E Pike and E Pine at Harvard, preserve some of its elements and put up a 260-unit apartment complex.

Rosenast said they’ve been notified that this July could be the start of demolition.

Golazo, which means super goal in Spanish, moved into the former showroom and office space in November, 2010 just as it was starting to launch a line of all-natural energy drinks. The staff was under the impression that they would have a year, at most. However, the owners have repeatedly extended the lease.

“We love being on the Hill. The longer that we’re here, the better,” said marketing manager Jorge Perea, who added that people still walk in asking about servicing their beemer.

Perea said a major advantage of having such a large space is the ability to hold special events and the occasional soccer match on a makeshift pitch that takes up about a third of the old showroom floor. CHS witnessed this first hand last Friday when several neighborhood teenagers played a 3-on-3 pick-up game, while Golazo employees worked in the office upstairs. Later that night, the company hosted 150 soccer fans who gathered to watch the US vs. Mexico game projected on a giant screen.

Golazo was started in 2010 by Rosenast and Cranium founder Richard Tait, both big soccer fans. They saw an opportunity in the energy drinks business and decided to target soccer players and health-conscious consumers. The company now offers eight energy and sports drinks that contain “all-natural flavoring, non-GMO ingredients such as coconut water and agave nectar but half the sodium of the leading sports drinks.” The drinks are produced in Portland.

Rosenast, who is also an owner of Garage Billiards and Bowling, said Golazo is looking at several sites for its next home. He said the preference is to stay on the Hill but that would likely mean another temporary lease because any permanent solution with the square footage they want and could afford would be in some place like SoDo or Kent.

While their office situation is up in the air, Perea said Golazo’s business is steadily growing. Golazo’s beverages, including flavors like mango-lime and Jamaica hibiscus punch, are now distributed at  Whole Foods, QFC, PCC, Uwajimaya and other retailers in the Northwest. In May, Whole Foods should start carrying Golazo’s drinks in its stores in Northern California.

“Our goal is to continue to grow along the West Coast and to go from San Diego to Bellingham,” said Perea.

Which neighborhood or city its headquarters will land after July remains to be seen.
