The man arrested following Sunday night’s stabbing in Cal Anderson has been charged in the crime. 38-year-old Jeremy Nelson faces one count of second degree assault for the attack that the victim says started when he pushed away Nelson’s pit bull Zeus as it was running around without a leash in the park. The victim suffered a significant gash below his ribs in the attack. According to police, one witness said it could have been worse as the attacker also tried to stab the victim in the neck.Police recovered a knife believed to be the one Nelson used in the attack in the grass of the park following his arrest.Prosecutors say Nelson’s criminal record includes convictions for assault and weapons charges as well as various drug charges including a 1997 drug “delivery” conviction. Nelson also faces a drug charge following Sunday night’s arrest after police say they found a small packet containing a substance suspected to be heroin in Nelson’s pocket.- Police continue to search for the suspect believed to be responsible in another stabbing in Cal Anderson Thursday night.
- There are no updates in the sexual assault investigation stemming from this May 6th incident in which a woman told police she was held at knifepoint and assaulted in Cal Anderson Park, according to SPD detectives.

- The driver in this early Saturday morning rollover crash on E Madison has been charged with driving under the influence. Aaron Russell, 25, pleaded not guilty to DUI earlier this week and faces a June hearing. Police say Russell registered readings of .196 and .198 in two blood alcohol level tests administered following the crash — two and half times the legal limit. Police say Russell told officers he had been drinking at Neighbours earlier that night. There were no significant injuries reported in the crash.
- Michael Heintz, 55, has been charged with DUI and reckless driving after a collision just after 2 AM Thursday at Broadway and Pike. There were no serious injuries in the crash. Heintz will enter a plea at a hearing Saturday.
- 32-year-old Nolan Deits will enter a plea at a Saturday hearing on his DUI charge after being stopped by police near 10th and Pike early Wednesday morning.

I admit it, I’ve been turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to a lot of things going on around me, but that’s the way I’ve always lived my life on Capitol Hill [off and on since 1976]. My breaking points are property destruction and violence and I’m not standing by for either. If someone doesn’t like that or thinks it’s unfair I really don’t care. My definition of violence includes behaving in a hostile and menacing way, acting aggressively territorial, and loud/aggressive speech. This is and has been a very tolerant neighborhood, but there are some people in the area and they play on that virtue.
Even with all the gentrification, the war on the homeless, the terrible injustices that happen every day around us, I live here because I want to. If you don’t want to live here, go away. People who delight in everything that goes wrong, who stir things up just for the hell of it and call it revolution, you may step off now. We’ve got things to do and you’re getting in the way.
Seriously, if I hadn’t been turning a deaf ear to the park because I wanted to show everyone I believe in equal access? This might not have happened to Rick.

Well said, Janet. Injury to one is injury to all. Street violence harms all citizens and deprives everyone of their civil rights. We deserve streets that are not smothered in fear. Enough of the assaults, violence, threats, bullying, and intimidation. It’s time for the people to take back their streets and public venues.
