CHS X-Files | Capitol Hill drone pilot spotted, glowing orbs, phone thief on wheels

Test

Glowing orbs over Capitol Hill Monday night? No way

This batch of blotter items from the streets of Capitol Hill is, well, weird. See something weird others should know about? Email CHS or call/txt (206) 399-5959.

  • Fuel vs. car at 11th/Pine: Seattle Fire’s Ladder 10 truck was called out to 11th and Pine to help police officers late Tuesday night after “a detained person” poured “fuel” over a car and then ran into the street during the incident with police. The fire crew was on hand to “evaluate the quantity” of the unidentified fuel that had been spilled and determine whether a more significant clean-up was warranted. No details yet from SPD about what transpired in the near-midnight incident.
  • Wheeled robbery attempt: A clerk at the Harvard Market Bartell’s sustained minor injuries Saturday night when a man with a red mohawk and riding a bicycle inside the store attempted to steal a phone and make his getaway on wheels. According to the police report, the woman and another employee were able to recover the phone when the mohawked man crashed in the parking lot before riding from the scene on Harvard.
  • Have you seen the Capitol Hill drone pilot? You’ve read concerns about Seattle Police using drones for surveillance but a resident of the Miller Park area around 19th and Thomas tells CHS she is concerned about a fellow citizen employing a drone near her home:

This afternoon, a stranger set an aerial drone into flight over my yard and beside my house near Miller Playfield.  I initially mistook its noisy buzzing for a weed-whacker on this warm spring day.  After several minutes, I looked out my third-story window to see a drone hovering a few feet away.  My husband went to talk to the man on the sidewalk outside our home who was operating the drone with a remote control, to ask him to not fly his drone near our home.  The man insisted that it is legal for him to fly an aerial drone over our yard and adjacent to our windows.  He noted that the drone has a camera, which transmits images he viewed through a set of glasses.  He purported to be doing “research”.  We are extremely concerned, as he could very easily be a criminal who plans to break into our house or a peeping-tom.

The woman tells us she called police but they decided not to show up when the man left. She wonders if anybody else has encountered this Capitol Hill drone pilot.

  • Hot dog stand hazard: Mad Dawg, the hot dog stand in front of the Chieftain pub on 12th Ave, was closed by health inspectors briefly this weekend after an inspector identified “the imminent health hazard of no available hot water” at the stand at 12:45 AM Sunday. With hot water restored, the stand has been allowed to reopen, King County Health reports.
  • Don’t slap club owners: The woman arrested for her part in this fracas over reported public sex inside Q dance club was busted for slapping club owner Scott Smith across the face, according to the police report on the incident.
  • Mysterious assault at Pike/Broadway: Police called to the intersection of Broadway and Pike around 4 AM Sunday found a man bloodied in a beating that he could not explain:Screen shot 2013-05-08 at 11.29.17 AM
  • Car2Go hit+run X-File: Driver arrested in Hill’s infamous Car2Go hit and run incident? Still no charges.
  • Cafe disappearance: The Online Cafe has, indeed, disappeared. X-File solved!

The drone could have been one of the Stranger’s writers who routinely uses the drone to show how useless the thing is. Though, he usually uses it in less neighborly parks.

My dad has been obsessed with remote control helicopters in the last couple of years and advanced to flying ones with cameras. (He does this in wide open rural places, not near anyone’s windows.) From my conversations with him, these things are filled with small fragile parts which must be regularly replaced by mail from China. If I saw one hovering near my window I might look for a slingshot or a hose….

Drones (quadcopters mostly) are easy to get ahold of.

$300 at Pacific Place Brookstone gets you one you can drive with an iPhone.

$500(ish) gets you a DIY kit you can build yourself from plenty of reputable dealers on the Internet that you can mount a GoPRO camera on.

You can also get smaller toy ones for sub-$100 on Amazon.

Yes. It could be someone planning to rob your house or peep on you, but the more likely answer is that someone is just playing with their cool new toy. Maybe you should assume that before jumping right to nefarious thoughts. Most burglars and peepers operate fine without dropping coin on flying robots.

the drone conversation interests me. The guy flying it has NO right to fly in the airspace over somebody else’s yard. he’s lucky he didn’t lose it. As mentioned above, a garden hose could really ruin his day.

Drone Man has every right to fly it. There are hardly any laws regarding the use of civilian drones and individuals do not own the rights to the airspace above their property. Even if the police came the likely scenario would be politely asking drone man to stop but I highly doubt the drone man would be charged with any crime.

Not all drone pilots are jerks. Also, there’s more than one that flies at Miller Park. Please be more precise in your reporting, jseattle.

Flying a drone over someone’s house is legal, though you’d better have insurance before you do it. Hovering outside of a window is likely trespass but we’ll have to see how the courts handle that case.

Firing lasers skyward may get you a visit by the FBI if you strike an aircraft with pilots.

The innocent assumption stops the second there’s a camera involved and the dude refused to not fly near the window. That’s instant grounds for target practice.

Jamming the airwaves is another great way to get a visit by the FBI along with skyward laser-fire.

Obviously this woman was not involved in direct conversation with the drone pilot. She seems a bit paranoid, jumping to conclusions from a second hand account. I mean, seriously, we live in SEATTLE, home of innumerable tech companies that attract hobbyists of all the latest technologies. Flying a drone close to someones home and right next to your window are two different things — I am skeptical about the accuracy of this comment.

Maybe before posting such crude remarks about someone that could be her neighbor, she should step back and consider that not everyone who uses remote control gadgets are “peeping Thoms”, the same that not everyone who may use a chain saw is a potential “murderer”. As far as a sling shot or weapon, good luck with that one, since flying drones in the US is not illegal. You break it, you bought it, and that IS considered harrassment.
