Thursday, May 16th

  • Seattle Beer Week continues through Sunday.
  • Author reading: Claire Messud reads from her “brilliant, funny new novel,” The Woman Upstairs. Elliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
  • Breaking Hearts is a look at love’s tougher moments as performed by Vocalpoint! a vocal, dance, and dramatic arts ensemble of high schoolers. Performances continue weekends through May 26th. Broadway Performance Hall, 8p.
  • Team of Heroes: No More Heroes continues through May 25th at Annex Theatre, 8p.
  • World premiere of We Are All Failing Them, a collaborative work by composer Robin Holcomb, filmmaker Britta Johnson and theater artists Curtis Taylor. Described as a song cycle, the evening length piece nwffis performed live with film, objects, and music. Repeat performances Friday and Saturday. Northwest Film Forum, 8p.
  • The 6th Annual “On My Block” Fashion Show presented by the Fashion Club of Seattle University.

  • Volunteer Park playground dedication, 4-6p
  • Photo show opening: Based on Location features Jake Clifford’s large format photographs printed on sheets of wood 5 ft wide and life-sized. LoveCityLove (1530 Melrose), 6 – 10p.
  • Author talk: Rosalie Riegle discusses the oral narratives from Doing Time for Peace, which features the stories of peacemakers who said “no to war” through civil disobedience. Elliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
  • Le Pont Du Nord, a classic film by Jacques Rivette which follows the Paris-based adventure had by a mother-daughter pair of miscreants, opens Friday and continues through May 23rd. Northwest Film Forum, 7p and 9p.
  • Gathering Bones, an imaged based 60-minute dance performance with original score, debuts Friday and repeats on Saturday. Velocity Dance Center, 8p
  • Dickslap, a monthly dancy mayhem night with jello shots, freebies, and beard rubs, is guest-hosted this month by Dan Savage. Music by DJs Trouble and Pavone. You’ve been warned. The Eagle (314 E Pike St.) 10p – 3a.
  • SIFF brings 144 movies* to Capitol Hill.

Saturday, May 18th

  • What Was Your First Book? is an all-ages story time in which readers share the first book which inspired their love of reading. Readers include Tamara Murphy, Rachel Kessler, a Sounders player, and more. Richard Hugo House, 10a – 12p.
  • Children’s Book Week Celebration: Ada Technical Books’ staff and owner will read from some of their favorite children’s books, and will have tasty snacks plus little gift bags for kids. Will Goodnight iPad be read? Go and find out. Ada Technical Books, 713 Broadway E, 2 – 3p.
  • Author reading: Journalist Stephen Roderick from his story of his military family in The Magical Stranger at 2p
  • doorsYoga in a nightclub! at Q, 3:30p.
  • Musician-author book signing: John Densmore, founding member of The Doors, will sign his book The Doors: Unhinged, plus one other item of memorabilia you own. (Here he is lighting fire with his drumming 45 years ago.) Elliott Bay Book Company, 5p.
  • Seattle City Council candidate Kshama Sawant celebrates getting on the ballot. Jai Thai, 6 – 8:30p.
  • Sasquatch Poster Show features a collection of screen-printed posters created for the 2013 Sasquatch! Music Festival. Vermillion, 7p.
