What are you up to tonight?
I’m with my friend shopping, and I’m going to go to the show upstairs [The Highline on Broadway]. I’m one of the promoters here.
Do you have any good shows coming up?
On July 7, I have this show at Barboza, which is below Neumos. There are six bands on the bill and only $8, or $10 at the door.
Spoken like a true promoter! Are you a Seattle native?
No, I’m from Miami, Florida. I live on the North End now.
Do you hang out on the Hill very often?
I do, as much as I can.
Other than promoting shows, what line of work are you in?
I was selling cars for a while, but I really love booking shows. I love helping musicians.
What was the hardest part about being a car salesmen?
Convincing people that I wasn’t an asshole or dishonest. It was hard because I was young, too.
Are you a musician yourself?
I was in a punk band for a long time, but now I’m solo.
What are some of your influences?
A.F.I., Incubus, Misfits, Glenn Danzig. I’m also a huge fan of Davey Havok because he’s straight edge and vegan and doesn’t consume any animal products. I really look up to that.
Are you straight edge?
I was for seven years, then something happened to me and I broke edge, but I want to go back to it. I’ve been vegetarian for ten years. In Seattle they support that a lot—there are a lot of vegan and vegetarian restaurants.
Where do you go for vegan food on the Hill?
Actually, because I’m from the north, I go to this place in Arlington called the Mirkwood & Shire. It’s a music venue and a tattoo parlor and a restaurant. It’s a hair salon, too.
So you can get some vegetarian food while getting your hair cut?
And then get a tattoo afterwards!
Any other thoughts on life on the Hill, or life in general?
Life in Seattle is great, it’s nothing like Miami or any other city because people treat you with respect. I’ve never had anyone come up to me and be rude or anything. Except for drivers, but that’s true everywhere.

Do you live on the Hill?
No, I live in Renton.
I love your shoes. If you click your heels three times, will they take you back to Renton?
That would be convenient, but no.
Besides, if you click your heels in those, I worry that you might hurt yourself. Are those hard to walk in?
Actually, not really. They’re a lot more comfortable than they look.
Why come out here instead of somewhere in Renton?
Because Renton bars are sketchy. And you’ll get shot.
I’ve never been to a bar in Renton.

People really get shot in Renton bars?
All the time.

I did not.
What line of work are you in?
Currently, I don’t have a job.
What would you like to do?
Interior design. It’s what I’m going to school for—I’m getting my degree in it.
What do you think of the interior design in here [The Unicorn]?
I think it’s really cool, from what I can tell in the dim lighting.
What else did you guys do tonight?
We went to R Place, and Barca. We’re waiting for the rest of our group to come out, so we can figure out what to do next.

What are you up to tonight?
I’m here to hang out with some friends, hopefully. It was unplanned, I just decided at the last minute to go out tonight.
Did you have to work today?
I did not.
You had the day off?
I’ve had the day off for a while now. Long story short, I was at my previous employer for ten and a half years before I got laid off. It was sort of a blessing in disguise.
Is it hard to have a lot of unstructured time? Because when I have unstructured time, I wake up in the morning, have a coffee, and then somehow it’s already five o’clock in the afternoon.
I thought it would weird me out at first, but I’ve sort of treated it as an extended vacation. I’ve found lots of stuff to keep me busy. I’ve had a few really good job leads in the past month, so I’m really excited.
What was the highlight of your day today?
Well…I played tennis. Hence the racquets [in backpack]. It was sort of an easy day today–by the time I got going, it was kind of late.
Yes, I know the feeling! Are you a native Seattleite?
I’m from Hawaii, but my dad was stationed at Fort Lewis when I was two. I’ve kind of bounced back and forth between here and Hawaii.
Do you have any big plans for the weekend?
Possibly maybe having dinner at a friend’s house on Sunday. I’m more of a fly-by-the seat of my-pants type when it comes to planning.
What about for the rest of the summer?
I don’t know. I think you should make something up.
Believe me. You don’t want to tell me to make something up.
It would be more interesting than anything I have planned. Maybe say I’m going to Italy or something exciting. Or that I’m an international spy.
If you were an international spy, you would tell me that you had nothing interesting planned, except maybe going to some barbeques at your friend Dave’s house. It’s a great cover.
Let’s go with that. Then people can imagine it’s something much more exciting and mysterious.
