Blotter | Arrest of Pike/Broadway attempted armed robbery suspect brings big police response

  • Pike/Broadway robbery suspect busted: Police rushed to the intersection of E Pike and Broadway early Monday morning as an attempt to take four men into custody following an attempted armed robbery briefly got out of hand. In the incident, SPD contacted four males matching the description of a group who had attempted to rob two brothers in the same area just after 2 AM. Police arrived and were able to take the four into custody after a brief struggle on the sidewalk in front of QFC with one of the suspects. According to police radio, one man was arrested for brandishing a knife in an attempt to rob the brothers of their wallets as the other males waited in a nearby vehicle. The victims were able to thwart the hold-up and left the area to call police before returning to help identify their attackers. One 22-year-old was arrested and taken to the East Precinct.
  • Harvard Ave brawl: One man was arrested and another suffered lacerations to his arms and legs and a swollen jaw in a large melee reported early Sunday morning just after 2 AM in the 1800 block of Harvard Ave:Screen Shot 2013-07-29 at 11.38.01 AMThe victim told police he went to high school with the suspect, had not seen him in more than 10 years and didn’t know why he was attacked.
  • A CHS reader reports a burglary at E Olive St’s Boylston Court Apartments on Sunday night:

Last night around 8:00 p.m. I came out of my bedroom to find a young-mid 20’s woman in my living room packing a backpack full of roommate’s property. I was very confused because she was very relaxed and tried to explain me that was just lost and looking for a friend. I’m positive that she was under the influence, clearly not in the right mind. I made her show me what was in the backpack that she claimed to be hers. She had packed a mac book, iHome. I called 911, she ran out, and I followed her to see which direction she was heading. As far as I could tell she did not make it away with any of our belongings.

She was inside of our locked gated back yard, and made her way into our apartment.

SPD showed shortly after and took all the information.

She was not caught as far as I know.

UPDATE — Animal clinic burglarized: Broadway’s Urban Animal suffered an overnight break-in this weekend as staff at the 1001 Broadway veterinarian found a real mess Sunday morning:

If you came in today, thanks for looking past our mess. Urban Animal was robbed last night. The front door busted in and our front desk computers and iPad stolen. It could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, we have an amazing staff and great friends. Thanks to all that helped out! (if you see our iMacs at the local pawn shop let us know)

  • CHBP voyeurism allegations: The suspect in Friday night’s reported voyeurism incident at Capitol Hill Block Party has not yet been charged.
  • Jimmy-Jam: The Seattle PI reports on the details behind this peculiar June incident that left a man lying naked in the street behind Garage Billiards:

Already on federal probation, Jimmy Gene Miller, Jr., remains only a suspect in the June beating; the victim, who was found naked and unconscious in an alley behind The Garage, now claims he may not even have been attacked.

Instead, federal prosecutors contend Miller – a 28-year-old known to friends and police as “Jimmy-Jam” – has been charged with unlawful gun possession, a crime for which he previously served a lengthy prison term.

Speaking of that Pike/Broadway corner, is there a reason businesses aren’t allowed to enforce a “no loitering” policy? I’ve lived on the Hill for 15 years, and that whole block surrounding the QFC has turned into a hang out for bored & aggressive teens who sit there all damn day harrassing people. It has to be affecting their business. I know I rarely go there anymore because it’s so annoying. If the city didn’t make it as inviting for these kids to gather, maybe they’d go back to the burbs where they belong.

Empathy is one thing, but I refuse to enable this group of people…Seattle is too complacent about live and let live when it comes to this element and the results are visible with the increase in criminal activity and assaults in the neighborhood.

Yes, exactly. There is a difference between providing assistance to people who need it and simply enabling them. I see open drug use on the street and drug deals going down right out in the open in the middle of the day in very public areas all the time, and people are doing it because they know they can get away with it here. We are not helping people by giving them the complete freedom to continue to satisfy their addictions whenever and wherever they want.

I understand that our police can’t be everywhere at once. So why not allow businesses to at least enforce “no loitering” policies with their own security. And take down that bus shelter in front of Cal Anderson that is ONLY used to shelter dealers. And kick people out of Cal Anderson after park hours (why even have park hours if you aren’t going to enforce them)?

I share your frustration, Anna. I don’t know what the laws are regarding “loitering,” but I’m guessing that it’s legal for anyone to be on the public sidewalk, as long as they are acting lawfully. If the QFC security people became more active in asking them to move along, they would just come back a short time later. My guess is that the QFC management has instructed their security to deal with problems only inside the store. There is a similar problem, albeit smaller scale, outside the Broadway Market QFC main entrance.

But what IS illegal is sitting on the sidewalk while panhandling, and of course any drug or alcohol use. When citizens see this activity, it would help if they reported it to 911. If the SPD started getting a lot of calls about a particular location, they might try to intervene. But if no one calls them, nothing will change.

I hope the corners outside of QFC are one of the areas that police keep a special eye on. This is the closest grocery for me, but I try not to go there after dark and even during the day it can be tricky. There are often big groups of harassing teens as the others say, and sometimes large groups being aggressive as I leave the store. I’ve also seen a lot of public urination on that block. It’s particularly bad when they close the Broadway door and you have to exit the store by Harvard. I would hope store owners could do something and if they can’t I hope rules change so that they will be able to do something. When I have the time I take the bus to a different supermarket rather than deal with it all. I know they have lost some of my business. (And I know it’s not necessarily QFC’s fault, or the fault of the other businesses, but I don’t like to deal with the safety hazards or the harassment.)

I’m sorry to hear about the break in at Urban Animal. They are a great new addition to the neighborhood and wonderful people.

Agreed. My pets have become clients of Urban Animal and I really like them. I’m genuinely sorry to hear of the break-in as well. Perhaps they need a guard dog! ;)

That really sucks about Urban Animal! Dr. Trusheim and the rest of the staff are awesome people. I’ve taken both my cats there and couldn’t be happier with them. I hope that they recoup this loss. People really disgust me sometimes.

The Harvard entrance of the Pike/Broadway QFC is easily one of the word architectural entrances ever made. First, a small door with a bench immediately in front of you. Then you are required to immediately snake left onto a ramp. If anyone’s trying to exit the store at the same time there’s a traffic jam. Once you’re on the ramp, it’s small and hardly allows two-way traffic. Exiting the ramp is another turn and terrible intersection with people leaving the checkout lanes. *Ridiculous* there there isn’t a better entrance there.

Not to mention the herd of turds that are constantly screwing with people simply trying to go buy milk
