Capitol Hill Block Party 2013 takes a more soulful turn on Day Two with a bill built around headliners Pickwick. It might seem like a needed respite after a hot and heavy start to the party on Day One. Don’t be fooled. Even if you promise yourself to take it a little more easy after a lack of pace on Friday, CHBP Saturday will probably suck you in. Fortunately, things will be a little more cool on the weather front leaving you with enough in the tank to make it to Sunday.

With a Day One sellout under their belts, organizers have been pleased with the logistics around the festivals tweaked layout and upgraded sound approach — even with some asking for the dial to be turned back to 11 like past Block Parties. Most of the first day’s music buzz has been, predictably, around the party kickoff antics of STRFKR and Girl Talk. We’ll see if Day Two brings some lesser known names to the forefront. Tickets for both Saturday and Sunday remain available.

  • CHBP’s Steve Manning tells CHS he is pleased with how Friday’s sold-out festival ran, adding that the organizers have been making small logistical changes like the location of port-a-potties and the orientation of the first aid tent. “We’re always streamlining it trying to make it better,” he said. Manning said he was especially happy with the projection of images on the walls of several buildings within the concert area. “It really feels like you’re inside of a festival and less like you’re in a neighborhood,” he said.

  • We’ll have to ask about official attendance — the “more than 30,000” number gets used a lot for the 3-day festival. With a sellout, you can assume that more than 10,000 people rocked E Pike Friday night.
  • Day One “from the crowd” highlights reportedly included a fake scarf dancer, free roses, Alive and Well beach ball swag, and, jorts.
  • Mayoral candidate Ed Murray takes the main stage Saturday. Mike McGinn did his thing Friday. And Bruce Harrell is slated for Sunday. Peter Steinbrueck? He had also been scheduled for Saturday but appears to be a scratch. We’ll see if we can find out what’s up.
  • Free stuff report from CHS intern Sam: “On the free swag front, Alaska Airlines is handing out (pretty decent quality) yo-yos, so you can walk the dog right into your crowdmates’ ankles. Twitter rumors tell us that Experience Music Project will be handing out translucent sunglasses, and the folks from Vitamin Water continue to give the stuff away by the gallon.”
  • Ignoring the boring masses with their purses and backpacks, there are two types of people in this world, or at least at Capitol Hill Block Party: fannypack people and drawstring pack people. Sam talked to a few of each:

Ouch. CHBP rep Steve Manning’s quote says it all: ”It really feels like you’re inside of a festival and less like you’re in a neighborhood,” he said.

Coming from an organizer of a festival named after a neighborhood, this speaks volumes. The non alcohol-based businesses that are crushed throughout this weekend every year would, I imagine, rather keep the visual emphasis on their neighborhood.

After many years in a row of proudly attending and supporting the block party, I decided to skip it this year due to lack of interest in the line up, cost and a rapidly expanding demographic I’m not interested getting to know in sardine-can surroundings. I DID, however, make a point of frequenting some of the non-restaurant and bar oriented businesses in and around Pike/Pine today out of support for the ‘hood. I encourage others to do the same. Getting around the periphery of the CHBP wasn’t bad and it’s been a stunning weekend for a walk.
