Screen Shot 2013-07-30 at 1.45.53 PMAs the Dan Savage-inspired movement to boycott Russian vodka grows, a group is planning another approach to protesting violence against LGBTQ people in the country. Here are the plans for To Russia with Love: A Rally to End the Violence:

Social Outreach Seattle (SOSea) is working with well-known LGBT and HIV/AIDS activist Cleve Jones to organize a Seattle response to the anti-LGBT violence in Russia.

Here is where the official Seattle Response will be this week: link

Well at least these guys are rallying against the awful things going on in Russian instead of Dan Savage’s dumb boycott of a Latvian company.

to follow on to what br said– it doesn’t make sense to show the Stoli bottle with this story, since Stoli is distilled in Latvia now.

From the link on the first sentence of this article:

Some are arguing—based on Stoli’s outdated Wiki page and the claims being made by Stoli itself—that Stoli isn’t a Russian vodka. “Presently the internationally distributed version of Stolichnaya is not a Russian vodka but is distilled and bottled in Latvia,” Stoli’s Wiki page currently (and erroneously) reads. “In 2009, William Grant & Sons signed an agreement to distribute Stolichnaya in the USA, taking over from PepsiCo.” That’s old news. On January 1, 2014, Stoli becomes a Russian vodka again. William Grant & Sons will no longer be distributing Stoli in the United States at the start of the new year:

William Grant & Sons and SPI Group announce that their current contract for the importation, distribution and marketing of Stolichnaya Vodka in the United States will not be renewed when it expires on December 31, 2013. The decision is a result of SPI Group’s desire to manage its portfolio of brands directly; SPI Group will therefore be establishing its own importing company in the United States during 2013, commencing operations on 1st January 2014.
The SPI Group—which will be distributing Stoli in the USA before the Olympic games begin this winter—is owned by Yuri Scheffler, one of the 100 richest men in Russia. Stoli is a Russian vodka.

Hai, lets boycott stawberries, because China has a red flag. DUMP STRAWBERRIES!

This whole thing is silly. Someone please use the intertubes. Anyone. Bing it. For God’s sake, ask friggin jeeves. The Stoli we buy in the US has nothng to do with Russia other then a brand strategy and some ingredients.

You want Russia to notice your discontent by exerting economic pressure on them? Boycott fuel, iron, and fertilizers.

I guess in the meantime, you can all pay more for non-Russian vodkas while I hopefully enjoy some cheap Stoli.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to take this to the Russian Consulate downtown? I doubt that Putin is paying attention to activity on CH.

I just love how often Dan Savage is given credit for inspiring or “starting movements”, when these efforts have been on-going in NYC, LA, SF, DC. London, Frankfurt, Toronto, Montreal and other cities for weeks now. Regardless, any action is a good action.
Boycotts have worked in the past,. No reason they can’t work again.
My question….how many LGBT folks will still tune in for the opening ceremonies?…boycott be damned.

DS thinks he owns this town and we are all his puppets. I’m glad I’m not the only one who dislikes him.

I will view the Olympics because I support the athletes who have worked their entire life for their moment to perform in front of the world.

YOU ARE WRONG Stoli’s farm is IN RUSSIA, Stoli uses Russian wheat, rye & water. Stoli distills the vodka IN RUSSIA before shipping it to Latvia to be BOTTLED & shipped. Read the STOLI page instead of WIKI http://www.stoli.com/about
DUMPSTOLI

[…] With mayoral candidates and Seattle-based LGBTQ pundit Dan Savage among those waving signs, flags and inviting drivers-by to honk, more than 200 protesters converged Tuesday afternoon on the Madison Park home that serves as the Russian Consular Residence at 3726 E Madison. The rally joins a wave of protest focused on ongoing human rights issues in Russia involving intolerance, hate and violence against LGBTQ people. Protests in Seattle have included rallies and an ongoing vodka boycott. […]
