Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s Outdoor Cinema series returns to Cal Anderson Park  on Friday. This year’s theme:  “I Need a Hero.” Hairspray opens the 4-film summer series. Read more about 2013’s Capitol Hill outdoor films here.

Northwest Film Forum’s annual ByDesign series brings together a diversity of people, ideas and creative visions to explore intersections of design and film. The program includes an opening night reception on Friday, a panel talk on public and experiential design with Seattle creative luminaries on Saturday, screenings of films on design and designers, and more. The series starts Friday and continues though Wednesday at Northwest Film Forum.

Thursday, July 18

• Art show opening: see new works by Chloe Allred in the lobby of Theatre Schmeater (1500 Summit Ave), 5 – 8p.

• Art show opening: Ltd Gallery presents Saturday Morning, in which 50+ artists reflect upon a time when all they needed was a bowl of cereal, their pajamas, and the TV. Opening include orange juice beverages, a cereal bar,  and DJ playing themed music. Scooby! Ltd Gallery (307 E Pike), 7 – 11p.
• Gamma Ray Games’ 4 -Year Anniversary Party, hosted at Gamma’s RayGun Lounge (501 E Pine). Drink specials, free pie, raffle, and special guests. 7 – 11p.
• Babeland kicks off a weekend of customer appreciation events with a Cock and Tail Party on Friday. Ladies from Sinner Saint Burlesque will serve free refreshments and sweet treats, door prizes will be awarded every 15 minutes, + special sale discounts all weekend. Babeland, 7 – 9p.

• The Ghastly Love of Johnny X (2012) is a retro-tastic, rock n roll, sci-fi musical film in black and white. Sounds like a future cult classic. Playing through July 25th at Northwest Film Forum, 7p and 9p.
• Author reading: join Ben H. Winters as he reads from Countdown City: The Last Policeman Book II, the second detective/crime novel in a planned trilogy. Elliott Bay Book Company, 7p.
• Game Show is a theater production which “puts the audience front and center amid a backstage story of sex, envy and deception. Come ready to win a prize!” Productions are Fridays and Saturdays through August 19th at Theatre Schmeater, 8p.
