Broadway streetcar work means weekend closures on Madison, Pine

IMG_9030Work to create and improve infrastructure supporting Capitol Hill’s massive public transit investments continues this weekend. Here’s the note from SDOT about closures at two well-traveled Broadway intersections:

Reminder: Partial intersection closures of East Madison Street and East Pine Street at Broadway

September 21-22

SEATTLE —Two streets, Madison and Pine, will be closed at Broadway on the weekend of Sept. 21-22 for First Hill Streetcar overhead electrical installations and roadway restoration.

East Madison Street will be closed to east- and westbound traffic at Broadway on Saturday from 2 a.m. until 8 p.m., and on Sunday 5 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Broadway will remain open to north- and south bound traffic through the intersections but no turns will be permitted at Madison.

The following detours will be provided:

  • ·         Westbound through traffic on East Madison Street will be directed at 12th  Avenue and East Union Street to travel west on East Union Street to East Seneca Street, continue west on East Seneca Street to Boren Avenue, then south on Boren Avenue to Madison Street.
  • ·         Eastbound through traffic on Madison Street will be directed to travel south on Boren Avenue to James Street, east on James Street and East James Way to 12th Avenue, then north on 12th Avenue to East Madison Street.
  • ·         Northbound traffic on Broadway intending to turn east on East Madison Street will be directed to continue north on Broadway to East Union Street, east on East Union Street to 11th Avenue, then south on 11th Avenue to East Madison Street.
  • ·         Southbound traffic on Broadway intending to turn west on East Madison will be directed to continue south on Broadway to James Street, west on James Street to Boren Avenue, then north on Boren Avenue to East Madison Street.

East Pine Street will be closed at Broadway from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22.Broadway will remain open to north- and southbound traffic. Eastbound traffic on East Pine Street will be required to turn right on Broadway. Westbound traffic will be required to turn right or left on 12th Avenue, except for local access traffic (vehicles with destinations between 12th Avenue and Nagel Place). East Pine Street will be closed to traffic between Broadway and Nagel Place.

The following detours will be provided:

  • ·         Westbound traffic on East Pine Street will be directed:
    North on 12th Avenue to East John Street;
    West on East John Street to Broadway;
    South on Broadway to return to East Pine Street.
  • ·         Eastbound traffic on East Pine Street will be directed:
    South on Broadway to East Pike Street;
    East on East Pike Street to 12th Avenue;
    North on 12th Avenue to return to East Pine Street.

When complete, the First Hill Streetcar line will have ten stations along a two and one-half mile route from South Jackson Street and Occidental Avenue South to Broadway and Denny Way. The City of Seattle is developing the First Hill Streetcar in partnership with Sound Transit, with funding provided through the 2008 voter approved Sound Transit 2 (ST2) transit expansion plan.  Completion is planned for mid- 2014.
