Since 1999, 16th and Madison has been home to one of the most respected grocery co-ops on the West Coast. Following a brief ceremony in front of the deli counter Thursday, Central Co-op will have at least another five years in its longtime Capitol Hill home.

Co-op representatives Thursday signed the paperwork on a five-year lease extension that will keep it in the Blanton Turner-managed Madison Crossing building into 2019.

In 1999, the cooperative moved into the newly constructed building as its first and only commercial tenant in the space.

The co-op got its start more than 20 years earlier on 12th Ave where it operated until the late 90s move. In late 2011, CHS reported on the cooperative’s success in paying off loans for constructing its new home and moving forward under the updated Central Co-op brand.

Membership in the market — a CHS advertiser — has now grown to around 12,000.

Last week, CHS showed you the latest grocery store addition to the area as Stockbox First Hill opened at 9th and James.

Thankfully something that is not a bar is sticking around! If we are lucking we might get to 5 such businesses on the entirety of Capitol Hill!

Yay! Five more years of overpriced food and major attitude. And five more years of my boycott ever since I found a staple in my tub of food from their deli.
