You can experience some of the treasures housed inside Volunteer Park’s Seattle Asian Art Museum in a new online catalogue. With an exhibition showing through spring at SAAM, 150 items in the Seattle Art Museum’s highly regarded collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy have been photographed and documented for the interactive gallery found at chinesepainting.seattleartmuseum.org.
The launch of this online scholarly catalogue coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Seattle Art Museum’s founding by Dr. Fuller. In celebration, the museum has organized an exhibition of masterpieces from its renowned Asian art collection. The exhibition, A Fuller View of China, Japan and Korea, will run until April 13, 2014 at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) where visitors can access the online catalogue in the museum’s galleries.
Each piece features an essay and information about details, inscriptions and seals. Virtual visitors can also leave comments — we’re interested to see what kind of commentary Buffalo and Herder boy engenders.
According to the museum’s announcement of the new online gallery, this first online catalogue was made possible by the Getty Foundation’s Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI). Getty funding “enabled SAM to imaginatively implement this pilot project, assess every object, take new photography, conduct in-depth research and travel to compare with like works elsewhere, and commission essays from expert scholars, professors and curators.”
The catalogue is designed to accompany you as you walk through the Volunteer Park museum — or, in CHS’s case, inspire you to get off your duff and visit one of Capitol Hill’s more unique community assets.
SAAM is located inside Volunteer Park just north of the reservoir off E Prospect and is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10a to 5p — late on Thursdays until 9 PM. Admission is $7 for adults and there are various free days each month depending on your demographic. Get more info here.
