  • $1,700 burglary: The owner of the African imports store that has been holding a “clearance” sale since spring in a Broadway building destined for redevelopment told police a burglar pulled off a more than $1,700 heist last week. According to the SPD report on the overnight Monday, December 9th burglary, somebody was able to break a padlock and enter the 200 block Broadway E building:Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 11.12.26 AMA man who identified himself as the store’s owner told police the burglary netted $734 that had been left in the cash register and an estimated 100 items (“belts, hats and socks”) worth more than $1,000. An investigated yielded a possible suspect finger print on the damaged cash register.
  • Broadway hold-up attempt: The victim in an attempted hold-up on Broadway late on the night of Wednesday, December 11th fortunately suffered only a ripped t-shirt and a bruise in the incident.Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 11.13.24 AMThe victim said he believed the suspect was high or intoxicated and likely homeless. A search of the area by police was not successful.
  • Broadway assault charges: The man arrested following two apparently random Broadway street attacks has been charged with two counts of assault. Prosecutors and police say Anthony M. Johnson, 26, verbally and physically assaulted his victims in a bloody rampage along Broadway the night of December 3rd. One victim suffered a fractured orbital and lacerations in the attacks. While police report that Johnson allegedly was yelling anti-gay slurs during the assaults, he is not facing hate crime charges in the attacks. According to prosecutors, Johnson has been convicted for similar violence in the past. In the meantime, he has continued to have run-ins with the law. On December 12th, SPD hauled him to jail for theft and failure to appear.
  • First Hill robbery arrests: Police have arrested two men in the December 6th Friday night beer robbery at a First Hill gas station in which the suspects allegedly shot a clerk in the foot as they fled. The 25-year-old and the 18-year-old have not yet been charged in the incident.

Detectives were able to identify the suspects through their investigation.  Yesterday afternoon, one of the suspects, an 18-year-old man, was observed by officers as he was walking through Westlake Park.  He was taken into custody and interviewed by robbery detectives.  He was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery.

Last night, detectives tracked down the second suspect, a 25-year-old man, and arrested him in SeaTac.  He was also booked into the jail for robbery.  Robbery detectives will continue to investigate this case.

  • Broadway heavy rescue: Seattle Fire was called to the 1400 block of Broadway near the Harvard Market QFC for a “heavy rescue” early Sunday morning to a report of an adult male with his arm stuck in a roll-up door. The victim was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.
  • In case you missed it: East Precinct has a new captain.

“The African imports store that has been holding a “clearance” sale since spring…” LOL! They’ve been holding that “clearance” sale since the early 2000s! They just keep changing locations.

I was going to say…I moved here in 1996, and that store was going out of business then.

They’ve been “going out of business” up and down Broadway at least since I moved here in 1994. I chuckle every time I walk by that place.

It’s never to early to start going out of business

The African imports store’s ongoing going out of business sale sometimes feels like the one constant in an ever changing neighborhood.

I just wonder why the man assaulting people while yelling gay slurs is not facing hate crimes charges. Surely this is what the law is written for….

I don’t think the police looked very hard for the fellow the night of the 11th. Somebody acting the same way was walking down Boylston towards Olive probably 10 or so trying to start a fight with anybody he saw eventually throwing the bottle of whatever he was drinking and shattering it on something. When I thought it wise to get the heck out of there was when he tried to kick in the front of Vino Verite and the roll up door next door. I was a full 4 blocks away and could still hear him screaming at people. I gotta think it’s connected to the Broadway incident.
