Blotter | Death at 22nd/Madison, vandalism spree hits Broadway

  • Man found dead: An apparently homeless man was found dead in a wheelchair outside the Starbucks and Safeway at 22nd and E Madison Thursday morning. SPD and the King County Medical Examiner are investigating the incident first reported to authorities around 8 AM Thursday. There were no signs of foul play but a cause of death is pending.
  • 20131220_080254Vandalism spree: A small wave of more damaging than typical vandalism as broken out around Broadway. Just after midnight Wednesday, police investigated three damaged ATMs and a broken glass door at the Broadway and Thomas Chase. Police found a “medium sized” rock inside the bank near the broken door. Video surveillance from the night is being reviewed. The frequent target for graffiti and vandalism was joined by US Bank where a CHS reader also reported damage Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, these photos sent in by reader Heather show graffiti and broken glass at the Broadway/John outlet of American Apparel, itself a relatively frequent target in past years — though this bout was a little more explicit in purpose. Meanwhile, this police cruiser parked near East Precinct also appeared to suffer an attack this week.

No one in Occupy/Decolonize ever got back to me on this one; I have no credit. I’ve always paid with cash. I’m not on anyone’s dole and I’m self-employed. Still, I tried to get an account with a credit union because…well…that’s a long story and no time, but suffice it to say, I’ve never used credit, I’ve always used cash, I’ve never been on the dole, and I have often paid my bills late. That matrix of information makes me a no-go for a credit union. No problem, it is what it is for now. I have to have a bank that’s local. I use the Chase bank on Broadway, usually through the ATM outside, if it’s not broken. I live very simply and I don’t “shop therefore I am” and in fact, I have no idea WTF you people are even talking about…gosh…It’s the solstice, rejoice or don’t. But don’t be ticked-off at ME because I’m doing the best I can. And how am I going to get money to pay your bail if you keep smashing my ATM’s on the weekends? Heh…you’re not revolutionary’s, you’re idjits.

Apologies to all, but wanted to say it so I did. “They say” the truth hurts and often it does ~ Janet

not to address the story itself, but to address your questions.

We exist in a system where by nature credit is a requirement else life becomes incredibly hard… my suggestion would be to more be angry at the fucks who created this system in which you and so many others struggle in while a few get rich, than the sap(s) who did this.

I don’t think they were thinking “how can we ruin janets day.”

but alas, a little inconvenience trumps all the environmental, social, economic damage created by chase, and corporations like it.

all the bad things those companies do with your money, mine, all those investments, everything…. all those bad things are irrelevant because their window got smashed, and the ATM’s were broken.

I do still try to cling to hope in life, because it’s quite the shitshow… but I can’t follow, nor understand that position, and it frankly makes me lose a lot of hope in humanity, when windows and ATM’s are more important than human lives… two way street…

I agree, thank you for the civility, these types of conversations are the end goal of ALL actions, no matter how meaningless they seem, or foolish, or self destructive, if it gets people talking and possibly moving towards self organization vs. being herded like farm animals, then that action is a success.

PS ~ Didn’t ever think someone was out to “ruin Janet’s day.” I don’t get angry at things, I just work around them. My premise is this; you, or them, or whomever, are attacking symbols. Attacking symbols is pointless. Chase bank don’t care, the people who fix the stuff prob’ly say, “Yay! More work.” but it’s completely inconsequential to “the system”.

look, we don’t have to see eye to eye, nor agree on tact. that’s okay, we are two free autonomous individuals. as one there are certain acts of sabotage, disruption, destruction, of the pillars of capitalism. if it’s as simple as some lame graffiti on a wall, or the bombing of wall street id support it, bar the actors act accordingly and do everything in their power to minimize casualties.

you like to bring ageism in and use it against me, while i could go on a tirade about ageism and why it’s bullshit, and makes you an asshole, but ill just say im nearly 27, iv’e experienced a lot, and the older I get the more I despise this system that stole lands from my ancestors, committed genocide on my people, and my other half was culturally demolished by a manufactured famine by the British empire.

so yea, i’m a bit pissed off, considering most of the worlds wealth, all gold standard, all nominal money was stolen from native peoples in the past and is used today as currency to further colonialism into this 21st century monster. inevitably it will lead to the corporate dystopia our worst nightmares couldn’t conjure up.

Even if smashing a window or spray painting a wall is meaningless to you. so is marching on the street, so is our annual patronizing “participation” in electoral politics. then complain about their decisions, never questioning why your leaving the decision making of your own life in the hands of some chump who looks pretty and has a smooth tongue..

hey, if we see eye to eye, that’s cool, if not, oh well. i’m not here to proselytize anarchism, or direct action, because frankly i could care less, it’s my life, and if I see it making some effective change as if one person looking at some graffiti and going “hmmm…” < that's effective change, that's the way changes happen, people fucking talk to each other, and work as a community.

I don't hate you, I don't hate the tellers at chase, I don't hate officer friendly, I don't hate sgt. mckibbles. I hate police forces, millitary forces, i hate the corporations that control our lives, and i hate the government, and its fascist marriage to the corporations of this world.

good day, hope you have a decent holiday wherever your travels take you.

Travis, is that you!? If I’m mistaken I do apologize. Ummm…it’s a few ATM’s, Chase has insurance [they are the policy holders] so people wrecking stuff like that is inconsequential. I could care less, but I hate to see people act like idjits when the consequences for doing so are very high.

ATM’s = remember Pax? You might want to look that one up.

it wont let me respond to your other post… not not Travis, tho i probably know who you are talking about, also he, like me, are not likely brave enough to actually commit these sort of acts, i feel a lot safer with a group than being alone on an autonomous action.

yea, PAX, is a huge lesson in what to and not to do, and to be very fucking careful, because yes, insurance, and yes meaningless machines, but the powers that be fucking love their precious currency machines. and if monies/credits can’t be transferred monies stops flowing and capitalism slows, thus the military wing comes in(police, FBI, (insert shadowy government agency here.) ect.. the most powerful nation on earth will never die peacefully, and in the end with the rise of china, the US will NOT relinquish superpower status peacefully, it’s up to us to stop that possibility.

I appreciate your response even though we’re not on the same page. That’s OK! Much love and peace to you and yours. You sound like a thoughtful person and thank you for responding to an olde fok like me. That is rare, and it is appreciated.

I’m concerned about people getting caught doing minor crimes and having to face the injurious repercussions of the criminal justice system. It is possible to challenge the system in myriad ways without ever having to deal with the law.

“Vandalism”…eh…I think that’s feeding the system at this time. I hope people like you who are thinkers find some other way to speak truth to power.

I’m out, but thank you for your rational discourse.

Of course banks do some questionable things and deserve criticism on some issues. But anarchic vandalism does absolutely ZERO to influence what a bank does, so what’s the point? What it DOES do is piss a lot of people off and is therefore counterproductive to any political/social goals you may have. You do have such goals, don’t you? Or do you just think it’s “cool” to break things?

Re; the death of the man in the wheelchair Thursday night. It was brutally cold that night. The wind was really whipping too and everyone that had the means got under cover for the night. But it takes a lot of social skills to survive in any way on the streets, and when bad weather happens, well…many people aren’t geared for the weather living outside when it drops below freezing. Nope, I have no solution, but it’s something it would be a good idea for any of us to take a closer look at. We’ve got problems, but I think they’re solvable.

Been seeing a few of down-and-outs in the park recently. The ones like me, with no social skills. So…been leaving little gifts by where the folks crash. Not much, a $10 bill, warm socks, and a couple of bagels with cream cheese. My hope is they wake up to that and not freak out that someone got that close to them. None of this is easy.
