SPD reports that a male who appears to be in his 50s was the only occupant of the Bronco-style vehicle. He was taken to Harborview with life threatening injuries. SPD says a standard traffic collision investigation is underway.
The crash was first reported just after 5 PM. Traffic in the area was routed around the scene as John was closed in both directions for the response and the ongoing investigation.
UPDATE: Here is SPD’s preliminary report on the incident:
A man in his 50′s was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being extricated from an overturned pickup truck on Capitol Hill.
At approximately 5:03 p.m. officers responded to the area of 14th Avenue East and East John Street for the report of a one-vehicle collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that a male driver in his 50′s was heading westbound in the 1300 block of East John Street in his 1989 Ford pickup truck. For reasons yet to be determined, the driver lost control of his vehicle, struck the curb and overturned. The driver was trapped inside the truck after it came to rest and had to be extricated from the vehicle. There were no passengers in the truck, and no other vehicles or persons were involved in the collision.
Fire department medics responded to the scene and transported the driver to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.
I drive like this too when Bakery Nouveau is on the line!
Gotta get those baked goods for the Super Bowl
Seriously insensitive comments if the guy had a medical emergency. I hope he pulls through.
Oh my god, but how does one flip their car on this street?
It looked like he had a heart attack or another similar medical event.
It seemed like he had a heart attack or another severe medical event just prior to hitting the tree and flipping.
A car flipped on 16th and Thomas a couple years ago. Poor guy, hope he’s okay.
Yes, this may have been caused by the driver’s suffering a medical emergency. But remember, this occurred in the same city where a woman driving across the Ship Canal Bridge caused an ugly, multi-vehicle collision because was staring at a rainbow instead of watching where she was going. So it may instead simply be an example of clueless, inattentive Seattle driving, and all too typical.
And why bother to make that comment until you have the details? Using a life-threatening accident as an excuse to grandstand when you don’t even know the relevance of your issue to this case is classless.
But think how easy that makes it for the rest of us? If anything like this ever happens to etaoin, we can save time and immediately jump to the worst possible conclusion, and assume it’s all etaoin’s fault. No dicking around with any silly “benefit of the doubt”. How efficient.

I was out for a motorcycle ride yesterday on the way to Chungees for Wen’s infamous Yum Yum chicken and a pint of dank IPA when I saw this horrendous-looking scene. Police informed me that the driver was safely extricated without major injury.
I appreciate the people wishing my Uncle the best. Yes it was my uncle in the truck he had just left his dr. office and had a major heart attack. He was dead for ten minutes but thanks to the awesome response from the fire department and medical aid not to mention the incredible hero’s at Harborview he’s coming home tomorrow. God bless those who blessed us,
