OMG…Where is the editor? In at least 2 places maybe 3, this article on the 23rd corridor improvements imply 5 lanes not 3. the plan calls for one lane in either direction with a turnout lane in the middle. Multiple times it is stated that “After reviewing data and soliciting community input, SDOT will redesign 23rd Avenue between E John Street and Rainier Avenue S to three lanes – two lanes in each direction with a center-turn lane.” I’m no scientist but I’m sure 2nd grade math applies here. 2 + 2 + 1 =5. I think this plan is a mistake because 23rd is an in city highway and “traffic calming” is over educated, city government code for choke point that will snarl traffic for decades, and that is not an improvement for the future. This is a waste of money on a vision that is to small. What should happen is so obvious. Spend the money to buy the front yards of the property owners along the street, widen 23rd to a boulevard with actual “2 lanes in each direction with a center turn lane.” the city is growing not shrinking and Seattle isn’t Mayberry. if we are going to be a big city, then lets start looking and operating as such.
