Police investigating sexual assault at Seattle Central

BPH posterA music student was sexually assaulted last Thursday in a Broadway Performance Hall rehearsal room and police are looking for the suspect believed to have been caught on surveillance video.

Seattle Central Community College security posted these flyers around the campus in the 1700 block of Broadway with information about the man and the incident.

The student-run New City Collegian was first to report the assault:

According to the student, the assaulter fondled her breasts and attempted to forcibly restrain her as she tried to flee. After the student exited the performance hall the suspect, a white, bald, and middle aged male, was seen by student witnesses leaving campus via Harvard Ave.

A campus spokesperson confirmed the reported assault and said a security bulletin was sent to students about the incident. He said the investigation is being handled by Seattle Police.

We have not yet been able to reach SPD for an update on the investigation. According to police dispatch information from the 23rd, officers were called to the campus around 12:15 PM last Thursday to the reported sex assault and were told to be on the lookout for an older white male wearing a dark jacket and plaid shirt. There were no immediate arrests and no Seattle Fire medical units were called to the scene.

UPDATE: SPD confirms that the case is being investigated and has been assigned to a detective but no further details were yet available.

Anybody with information should call detectives at (206) 684-5575 or dial 911.

UPDATE 1/31/14 2:20 PM: CHS has learned that SPD has identified and interviewed the suspect in the January 23rd incident and his case has been sent to prosecutors.

According to police, the suspect, who has a diminished mental capacity, was interviewed and released this week after he was identified from the security images. Prosecutors must now weigh available evidence for any possible charges.

  1. A day after the assault the school sent out an email informing students of what transpired. In that letter extra security was promised, but security seems sparse (at best) as usual. I hate that I can’t feel safe in my school.

  2. Does Seattle Central have those blue emergency phones like the UW campus has? Where when you take it off the hook it autocalls for help? I want to know SCCC’s plan for violence prevention. Maybe some parts of the buildings should require ID cards for entrance? I’m not an expert. Just glad she got away but it’s still a crime. Hope that guy is caught before he strikes again.
