On the List | Gaylaxy Quest sci-fi, tree walk tour in Volunteer Park, State of the Hill, Czech films

Gaylaxy-Quest-355x550Gaylaxy Quest: A Celebration of Queer Sci-Fi & Fantasy Fiction will boldly take sci-fi readers where no sci-fi readers have gone before Friday night at E Pike’s Calamus Auditorium:

Gay City, Queer Geek, and Gay Romance Northwest are partnering together for a special Gay City “Meet the Author” event with four Washington State writers who boldly explore star systems and fantasy realms while spotlighting LGBT main characters and relationships.

Thursday night, community advocate Catherine Hillenbrand receives the 2014 Spirit Award at the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce State of the Hill event at Fred Wildlife Refuge.

The 1801296_10202745740220201_356347805_ophotographers featured in Blindfold Gallery‘s current show “Magic Nudes” will be at the gallery on Thursday 7 – 8:30pm for an informal talk about their work. Paul Dahlquist’s and Almendra Sandoval’s evocative, black-and-white images of artfully composed nudes complement and elevate each other.

Saturday, a tradition of having a good time for a good cause at Seattle University continues with the annual Seattle U Dance Marathon to benefit Children’s Hospital. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray reportedly will be on hand to do some boogeying down.

Tree Walk Flyer

Get to know the trees in Volunteer Park on a guided Tree Walk tour by experts on Saturday. To join this free event, meet at the entrance to the Asian Art Museum at 10am and plan for about two hours.  If you can’t make the tour on Saturday, the ents tree people with the City of Seattle have created self-guided maps for our Olmsted-designed park: Master mapNE loopSE loopSW loopNW loop.

Martyrs-of-Love-245_feature A traveling exhibition of films by Czech filmmaker Jan Nemec lands at Northwest Film Forum Friday through Wednesday.The Independent of Reality: Jan Nemec Retrospective features six New Wave films which showcase the director who “not only bucked the formalist conventions of his time, but also directly challenged the state art establishment with an approach he called ‘dreamy realism.’ The political controversy surrounding his subversive and surrealist work resulted in a 15 year exile from his country in the 1970s and ‘80s, making his films difficult to access in the U.S.”  Saturday’s film, Martyrs of Love, was considered most dangerous to the Communist ideology.
