Saturday night snow on Capitol Hill — UPDATE: Super Snow Sunday

Even with a relatively light coat of snow, some routes like E Aloha claimed a fender bender or two.

Even with a relatively light coat of snow, some routes like E Aloha claimed a fender bender or two.

Capitol Hill enjoyed a casual Saturday night snowfall that barely put a coat across the the neighborhood though things got a little heavier in the north toward Volunteer Park. Spin-outs were reported on E Aloha and there were occasional reports of snowballs being thrown at vehicles. Naughty, naughty. Enjoy it while it lasts. We’re predicted to accumulate less than an inch. A few pictures of the added twist to your Saturday night fun are below.

Even with the light totals, SDOT says plows are out patrolling and that streets are mostly bare around the city. The most recently cleared streets are marked on the SDOT Winter Weather Map.

Here’s the National Weather Service forecast:

  • Saturday night — Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 31. East northeast wind 7 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Sunday — A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service — after missing the mark by an inch or two Saturday night – says we’re pretty much done with snow:

A WEAK WARM FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL MOVE INTO WRN WA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT. AS PRECIPITATION BEGINS...THE AREA ALONG HOOD CANAL
WHERE COLD AIR TENDS TO REMAIN TRAPPED COULD GET A QUICK INCH OF
SNOW BEFORE CHANGING OVER TO RAIN. NOT ANTICIPATING ADVISORY AMOUNTS AT THIS POINT BUT WILL KEEP AN EYE ON THIS AREA TODAY. ELSEWHERE
ACROSS THE AREA...LIGHT RAIN WILL DEVELOP POSSIBLY STARTING AS A
LIGHT RAIN/SNOW MIX THIS AFTERNOON IN SPOTS. NO ACCUMULATIONS ARE
EXPECTED OUTSIDE THE LOWER HOOD CANAL REGION. A COUPLE INCHES OF
SNOW COULD FALL IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH THIS INITIAL WEAK SYSTEM
TONIGHT.

Here at Cal Anderson we’ve got about an inch and it’s still coming down.

Yeah I’m at Pike and Harvard and it has been going strong since 6:30 with no signs of stopping.

NWS has upped snow predictions “Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.”
Probably that deposited already. Snow and ice on Pine made driving interesting but doable (4WD and anti-lock brakes). One slightly jackknifed stalled bus on Pine.

Drivers slow and polite. All Cap Hill roads seem snow-covered.

A slow and steady pace wins the race!

Roads are not great– going on 10th this evening, a couple blocks north of the Roanoke Tavern, there were two buses parked and one stalled and blocking most of the southbound lane.
