Officials planning a $14.2 million overhaul of a Seattle Public Schools-owned 21st Ave E campus to reopen a Capitol Hill middle school in 2017 will meet with the school’s future parents, students and neighbors Thursday night.

CHS reported on the start of community planning for the project last month. A 17-member School Design Advisory Team working on the Meany Middle School plan including students, parents and neighbors has already been meeting for months on the project to overhaul the campus for seismic safety and remake the school to educate more than 800 students. The Miller Park Neighbors group has asked for more planning to be done related to the re-opened middle school’s potential impact on neighborhood streets and that the student population be capped at 600.
The campus is currently home to the NOVA High School and Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center programs. Both will move to new homes with the planned start of construction at Meany in summer 2014. In addition to “abatement and demolition of unnecessary site structures,” the project will include a reconfiguration inside existing buildings, earthquake retrofitting, building rehabilitation, accessibility upgrades, and a playfield renovation. The project will also attempt to meet the Living Building Challenge sustainable building certification program.
School officials say Thursday night’s meeting will go beyond design and open a discussion around “features of a comprehensive middle school and potential academic programs at the school.” Planning to open the school for the 2017/2018 academic year, Seattle Schools has not yet hired a principal for the middle school.
