Cops bust Broadway bank robbery suspect who fled to neighborhood doughnut shop

The suspect in a Tuesday morning bank robbery inside the Broadway Market shopping mall was taken into custody after a short manhunt when he fled to a nearby Top Pot doughnut shop.

Police rushed to the Wells Fargo inside the 400 block Broadway E shopping complex around 9:40 Tuesday morning to a report that an older white male wearing a red bandana, a green army jacket and yellow and black shoes had just robbed the bank by implying he had a weapon.

The suspect was seen fleeing the area westbound on Republican. Less than 10 minutes later, a responding SPD officer spotted the man entering the Top Pot on Summit near E Mercer. The suspect was quickly taken into custody. Seattle Fire was called to the scene to treat the suspect for a mouth injury suffered during the police response.

His quick capture brings to mind another Broadway bank robbery suspect who managed to enjoy a meal at nearby Charlie’s before being apprehended by police in an incident last October.

UPDATE: SPD has posted a preliminary report on the arrest:

A man was arrested minutes after he robbed a Wells Fargo bank on Broadway this morning.

At about 9:40 this morning, a man in his forties or fifties, wearing a red bandana, Army green jacket and black and yellow shoes robbed the Wells Fargo bank in the 400 Block of Broadway Avenue East.  Officers responded to the call within minutes of the broadcast.  Witnesses stated that the suspect left the bank on foot and walked away.  Officers located him several blocks away when he ducked into a Top Pot Doughnuts in the 600 Block of Summit Avenue East.  Staff inside the store said the man was acting suspicious, and asked them to call him a cab.  Officers arrived minutes later and took the man into custody.  Several witnesses positively identified the suspect.  He will be interviewed by robbery detectives and then booked into the King County Jail.

“mouth injury suffered during the police response”? There’s a cop/donut joke in there somewhere, but good work, they caught the perp, so never mind. ;-)

There’s something about bank robbers on Broadway. They’re such a casual, nonchalant group. Maybe it’s the atmosphere.
