  • Victims says E Pine mace attack a hate crime: Police were called to E Pine near Bellevue following a report that teenagers jumped from an SUV and attacked two people with mace Monday night. According to radio dispatches about the 11:30 PM attack, police were told that two teens jumped from a silver SUV and sprayed their victims with mace — UPDATE: The SPD report only details one attacker — a Hispanic male, approximately 5’6″ to 5’9″ and wearing all black — jumping out of the vehicle in the assault. The Stranger reports that the victims say the attack was a hate crime:

A man jumped out of the car and ran up to them. “He asked if we like mace, and then he maced us,” Lopez says, though she and her friend turned away swiftly enough that most of the spray landed on their jackets and bags. She heard him say something in Spanish, then remembers hearing the word “tranny” and something like “You stupid bitches like mace” while she was trying to avoid getting hit. The man quickly got back into the backseat of the vehicle and it sped off.

Police are currently investigating the incident as an assault and not a bias crime, according to the SPD report on the attack. According to police radio dispatches, the vehicle’s license plate number was recorded by somebody at the scene and the vehicle was registered to an address outside the city. Seattle Fire was not called to the scene to treat the victims in the incident according to the 911 logs. The attack comes after renewed concerns about intolerance and anti-LGBTQ crimes in the neighborhood.

UPDATE 4/9/14 1:25 PM: SPD confirms that the incident is being investigated as an assault. “If the victim has additional information, she has been urged to contact SPD and provide that,” a police spokesperson said.
