Capitol Hill food+drink | Last night at Piecora’s

We interrupt this stream of news about new restaurant concepts, craft cocktails and farm-to-table creativity for an unusual dollop of food+drink nostalgia. Here’s a look at some of the sights from Tuesday’s last night of service at Capitol Hill’s Piecora’s Pizza after 33 years at the corner of 14th and Madison.Final Night at Piecora's Pizza in Capitol Hill Seattle

CHS wrote here about what comes next after the Piecora family sold their building to an apartment developer for $10.3 million.

Many others have, of course, stopped in to say goodbye and share their thoughts on the end of the Capitol Hill institution. Not completely satisfied with nostalgia, we can’t resist the urge to look for a trend others might have missed in the change. One that comes to mind is the death of simple places to eat that kids like on Capitol Hill. You can call it a childless neighborhood but you would be wrong. Still, places like Chutney’s, Boom Noodle, Montlake Alehouse (yes, the alehouse had a kid pit), and, now, Piecora’s are gone. Watch your backs El Gallito, Vios, and Genki Sushi.

Capitol Hill food+drink notes

  • Now open on Capitol Hill — Broadway’s cafe by day, bar by night Corretto and E Pine’s ramen and Wagyu purveyor Shibumi.
  • Also open — a new Fuel Coffee on Bellevue replacing the just-shuttered Chico Madrid.
  • Coming this fall to the auto row-era building also home to Six ArmsVietnamese-French flavored Stateside.
  • Olivar’s last night of service will be Sunday, April 27th. CHS wrote here about Marron, the new project slated to replace Olivar in the Loveless Building.
  • A Taste of Capitol Hill benefits homeless meal program Community Lunch *and* takes place on the Hill *and* features some great neighborhood restaurants. For $50, you’ll get a special dinner prepared by the folks at Anchovies & Olives, Altura, and Poppy. The dinner is April 27th at Broadway’s All Pilgrims Church.
  • DIY beer people get ready, the 3rd annual Quinn’s Homebrew Competition is May 10 as Seattle Beer Week returns.10005798_10154035684930571_5090736118154415323_o
  • From the future of food journalism… a bakery writes about a Capitol Hill butcher… the Yellow Pages (???) interviews Anchovies & Olives, Bar Cotto and Rione XIII main man Ethan Stowell…. and Coca Cola wants you to know about Capitol Hill’s mystery soda machine that dispenses “a multitude of Coke and non-Coke products.”
  • Most eateries per capita in U.S. cities? Seattle is #2 nipping at the Bay Area’s heels and with more of a fast food presence than you might have thought.
  • Housed in a former mortuary, Pine Box makes this listicle of bars and restaurants located in converted buildings.
  • Barrio sends a note to tell us about a new Thursday night special “flash infusion” margarita based on  based on the concept of a “randall” for beer. We’re told the flavors “intensify” as the evening progresses. You could say that about most nights CHS spends drinking.
  • Tender Danny Rowse talks about working Mezcaleria Oaxaca bar and, surprise, names mezcal as the most “underrated” spirit.
  • Sun Liquor Distillery is now making rum:
  • Volunteer Park Cafe is adding…. bees.
  • Broadway’s Witness is adding… sidewalk seating.
  • You can get a free scoop of ice cream at Capitol Hill’s Cupcake Royale on Monday, April 28th. But you have to download their cupcake “rewards program” app.
  • The Voracious Tasting & Food Awards 2014 are being held next Thursday, April 24th at the Paramount. Barrio, Crush, Poquitos, La Bete, Restaurant Zoe, Quinn’s, Liberty, and The Old Sage are among the Hill-related participants. $50.
  • PR subject line of the week: “Von Trapp’s Special Sausage Program”
  • Rains are here to remind us that Seattle summer comes slow, not fast. Terra Plata reminds us that it will be worth the wait.

This is great news! I’ve always thought that corner would be a great location for a Jimmy John’s and a Starbucks!
