Last May, CHS told you about the “kids” of Broadway High gathering together their Capitol Hill stories for a new archive and documentary project about the school that stood at the site of today’s Seattle Central from 1902 to 1946.
The documentary Broadway Pride is now complete and will be airing in Seattle on the Seattle Central television channel soon — with plans to bring it to the Internet down the road:
SCCtv will be broadcasting ‘Broadway Pride’ at 8pm on four successive Saturday evenings in a row, beginning with Saturday, May 24, 2014. The other airings will be Saturday, May, 31, June 7 and June 14. The program begins at 8pm on each Saturday.
Those interested in viewing can watch on television in Seattle on Comcast Channel 28 or Wave Broadband Channel 19. If they live outside of Seattle, they can watch a live simulcast on SCCtv’s website home page, www.scctv.net.
We will continue to air it after June 14, but the details still being worked out. And a little further down the road we will probably stream the program.
The 40-minute video “brings to life, the experiences and impact Broadway High School had on those who attended, as told by the BHS students themselves.”

I’m having a hard time reconciling the photo on the postcard with the building that stands today. Was part of the old building taken down? Were the streets wider back then as there is much more open area at the front of the building now?

The building fronting Pine is gone (and others), but the next building with the arched windows is still there.

The building currently there is something of a mash-up of pieces of the original building.
The original building was the H-shaped building you see in the old photos, central part flanked by two wings.
Some years after construction, the back middle piece of the H was filled in creating a gymnasium space: this was the portion that was reworked as Broadway Performance Hall, and it was given a new front (it didn’t really have a front before since it adjoined the old center wing directly) using bricks from the original front of the center area – with modifications: one floor was removed, and the entry way now has three doorways instead of the old one.

My dad went to Broadway High after he came back from the Korean War; it was the technical school by that time, I think.
Yes, it was called “Edison Technical School.”
