CHS Community Post | Log-a-rhythm Enlivens 12th Avenue Square Park

log-a-rhythm1-1Log-a-rhythm, a temporary art project at 12th Avenue Square Park enlivens the park site in anticipation of construction later this summer. The project brings wit and whimsy to this empty lot and invites lingering by transforming the perimeter logs into “couches”. Wrapped in colorful patterns of wallpaper, they turn the site from a place to walk by to a place to enjoy.

Park design team artist Ellen Sollod led the effort and was joined by neighbors Brie Gyncild and Sheri Olson, Janet Berkow of Meadowbrook and Lydia and Steven Bassis of Capitol Hill. They devoted hours Memorial Day weekend to the effort.

Log-a-rhythm embodies the principals of “tactical urbanism,” a new strategy being adopted by the City of Seattle to promote projects that enliven public spaces by using quick, cheap, and often temporary interventions. New York City has been a leader in this regard. Park(ing) Day is one of the most well known of these efforts. This year the City has added Parklets as a strategy.

The 12th Avenue Square Park intervention was undertaken through volunteer effort and a modest budget (under $50) for materials. It was sponsored by the 12th Avenue Stewards in conjunction with its Department of Neighborhoods Matching Grant and with the endorsement of the Seattle Parks Department.

The mission of the 12th Avenue Stewards is to promote the vitality and livability of the 12th Avenue neighborhood.

The park is located at 12th Avenue and James Court between Cherry Street Coffee House and Ba Bar. Later this summer, Seattle Parks Department will begin construction to transform the empty lot into a park.
