CHS recognized for news coverage of Capitol Hill preservation issues

IMG_6825Some tired of our ongoing reporting of new Capitol Hill apartment buildings might scoff — but CHS is being recognized Tuesday night for its coverage of historical preservation on Capitol Hill.

We’ll be part of Historic Seattle’s Sixth Annual Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony along with fellow Capitol Hillers from Ada’s Technical Bookstore. The Ada’s crew, by the way, is being recognized for its new 15th Ave E cafe “transforming a humble house into an inviting, community gathering place for a unique neighborhood business.” To bring things full circle, CHS covered the new Ada’s location here — and did our best to bring the history of the old bookstore into the story of the present.

The full roster of 2014 award winners is below.

As part of the award, CHS will have two minutes to thank a few special people (like you!) and try to explain ourselves. It will probably be murky and unclear tonight but what I’d like to explain is why we bother to report in the first place. The primary mission for CHS has always been to provide the community with information on what is happening with its neighborhood assets — be it private property or public space, individuals or limited liability corporations. The buildings might have owners but we think the community has a share in that ownership simply by living here or caring about the area. Our job, then, is to report back to the owners about what we’ve learned about how these assets are being used — and, often, about how they came to exist in the first place. Call it preservation if you like but our focus is on today and, as much as possible, tomorrow.

Thanks for reading. It’s an honor to serve you!

Thank you very much for all the news- good and bad- about development. Some of the buildings that have been lost are assets that the communtiy will never have again. Density is a challenging issue for CapHill in 2014. You deserve kudos and I read your stories everyday, powerless to do anything, but at least informed.

I think the Capitol Hill Blog is the best. It’s actually how I get my news about what’s going on not only here but for the rest of the city. The best blog in the city. You conduct this blog like it’s a news source, like AP. Great job, folks.
