On the List | Capitol Hill Clean Sweep, Soccer Jam, Parke Diem in Volunteer Park

The annual Capitol Hill Clean Sweep community service event hits the streets and common areas of the neighborhood on Sunday to get it sparkling clean.

Join up by meeting in Cal Anderson Park at 10am to register, eat breakfast, and pick up a t-shirt and cleaning supplies. Entertainment and lunch will also be provided. (Secret private message to new Hill residents: Clean Sweep is a great event in which to meet your new neighbors.) The Clean Sweep is also part of the start of an entire month of Pride on Capitol Hill.

Stevens-Carnival-2013-16The annual Stevens Carnival at Stevens Elementary is the unofficial start of the countdown to summer for North Capitol Hill public elementary students. This year’s Carnival is Friday, 4pm – 8pm and is open to families from all around the neighborhood. As in previous years, expect fun, frolic, and a little mayhem as kids zealously join in the activities such as walnut smashing, hay pile treasure hunting, and squirt gun race contests for prizes. 10340175_892208257461958_4439380070123147661_nSoccer players, have you signed up for Street Soccer Seattle’s Capitol Hill Soccer Jam yet? It takes place at the Seattle University fields on Saturday 9am – 4pm and is open to all recreational or competitive players ages 18 and over.  “The Cap Hill Soccer Jam is a full day, 64-team, 4-v-4 street soccer tournament for adults and offers both recreational and competitive brackets. The event is a fundraiser for Street Soccer Seattle, whose mission is to foster the camaraderie, community, and confidence that is central to the sport of soccer to empower homeless individuals to find greater success and peace in their lives.”   Register here.

Saturday, visit Gay City for the third annual Word Play festival, a one-day spoken word festival including two workshops, a performance, and an artists reception.

The 4th annual Parke Diem: An Urban Culture Festival takes place on Saturday at the Volunteer Park Amphitheater, 11am – 8pm. This free event’s goal is to to bring together music, art, and community in a park setting. There will be vendors, live art making, and DJ music. New this year is a Kids Zone with activities for the youngsters.

On Sunday 12- 2pm only,  recycle your electronics at the temporary recycle station set up on 11th Ave next to Cal Anderson Park. You can get documents shredded too.

Finally, Thursday night at 7 PM, neighbors and community members will gather near the site of last weekend’s double homicide at 29th and King for a vigil to mark the deaths of 27-year-old Ahmed Said and 23-year-old Dwone Anderson-Young.
