Police search for killer in 12th/Main ‘gun battle’

Seattle Police homicide detectives have another murder to solve after somebody shot a man in his 20s to death amidst several bursts of gunfire early Saturday morning at 12th and Main on the southern boundary of the East Precinct.

Homicide in the International District
Seattle Police detectives are investigating an early morning homicide in the International District.

Just before 3 a.m. there were multiple reports of a shooting in the area of 12 Ave South and South Main St. Officers arrived at the shooting scene with 2 minutes and located a victim of the shooting.

Officers have located at least thirty bullet casings. One business and several vehicles were damaged as a result of the gunfire.

Seattle Police Homicide and CSI detectives are collecting evidence and investigating the incident. If anyone has information regarding the crime please call either 911 or the homicide tip line at 206-233-5000.

The reports of gunfire came in a night filled with booms of celebration as police fielded several reports of explosions from fireworks overnight. Only minutes after another fireworks report, 911 callers reported more bursts and people screaming just before 3 AM. This time, however, the fears about gunfire were real.

Police found dozens of shell casings at the 12th and Main scene. One officer described the scene as a “gun battle” via East Precinct radio. The victim’s vehicle was reportedly riddled with bullet holes.

The shooter and possible other suspects were reported to have fled the area on foot, according to East Precinct radio dispatches.

The slaying marks the third East Precinct gun death in the week. Police continue to search for an additional suspect in the shooting deaths of two men June 1st at 29th and King.

Mayor Ed Murray released the following statement on the latest murder:

For the third time in a week, Seattle has suffered a devastating loss of life as result of guns.  Once again, it is members of our East African community who feel the pain of this violence most directly. And once again, we as a city together mourn the loss of one of our young men taken too soon.  Our condolences are with the victim’s loved ones today.  The police department has our full support as it conducts its investigation to understand what transpired — and how and why — and bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice.

This should probably read SATURDAY morning instead of Sunday . . .

“. . . amidst several bursts of gunfire early Sunday morning at 12th and Main . . . “

12th Ave S & S Main St is in the south CD, not Cap Hill. Shootings near or in the Yesler projects have been going on since my parents lived there in 1961 and no doubt long before that. We’ll see if the new projects are a blessing or a Cabrini Green.

Thanks for that Pedantic Pete. You’re a real help. Your hollow rationalizations and hopeless demeanor are a balm to the troubled minds of all Seattleites.
