Man Arrested After Pulling Knife on Grocery Store Shoppers During Homophobic Rant
Written by Detective Drew Fowler on July 23, 2014
Officers arrested a knife-wielding man on Capitol Hill early this morning after he pulled a knife on two people inside a grocery store while in the midst of a homophobic rant.

A man and woman were shopping at the QFC at Broadway and E Pike around 1 AM when the suspect began leering at the woman. When the suspect said she was “very sexy” her friend stepped in and told the man to be more respectful. The suspect ignored the man’s admonishment and told the victims he could stare at whomever he wanted.
During the confrontation, the suspect pulled out a knife, made several homophobic remarks to the victims, who are both gay, and threatened to cut them.
The suspect fled the store, but police quickly found him a block away and arrested him. When officers searched the suspect, they found he was carrying two knives, and booked him into the King County Jail for malicious harassment, Washington State’s hate crime statute.

The suspect was also arrested late last year in what police said was a DUI hit and run. He has a previous arrest for assault in Seattle in 2010.

  • Chop Suey fanny pack robbery: A woman who noticed a man dancing close to “her backside” at Chop Suey late Monday night told police the dancer robbed her fanny pack of her cell phone as he boogied. SPD was called to the area near the club at 14th and Madison around 11:20 Monday night to look for the suspect. The woman and her friend told police the suspect kept dancing close to the victim and then left the club. The victim told police that is when she noticed her fanny pack was unzipped. The victim found the suspect outside the club and confronted him at 14th and Union where she said the man pushed her backward several times when she tried to retrieve her phone from his back pocket. A witness intervened and the suspect fled the area south on 13th Ave, according to the police report on the incident. The dancing suspect was described as a black male in his 20s, around 5’10” and 170 pounds, with short hair and a puffy coat and black pants. A search for the suspect was not immediately successful.

  • Safeway OD: CHS received a few inquiries about the large medic response to the 14th/John Safeway the night of Saturday, July 19th around 9 PM. Seattle Fire tells us its medics arrived after a report a male suffered an overdose in the grocery store’s bathroom. A person at the scene was performing CPR on the victim before fire units arrived.
