A fire in a 6-story Capitol Hill condo building was quickly brought under control thanks to the sprinkler system and Seattle Fire Wednesday morning.
Flames and smoke were reported around 10:10 AM coming from a fifth floor unit of The Meritage building at 124 Bellevue Ave E just below The Biltmore apartments.
SFD units filled the streets around Bellevue Ave E and E Loretta Pl as media helicopters hovered above during the brief response. The fire was declared “tapped” about 20 minutes after the initial dispatches.
There were no reported injuries.
The subsequent clean-up of the unit where the fire began and neighboring units damaged by smoke and water required what was expected to be a long stay by SFD units on the scene. Bellevue Ave E in the area remained closed for traffic as the clean-up continued.
UPDATE: A building resident posted this picture from the scene:
Per SFD this mattress was leaned up against stove, fell over and ignited gas stove in the process pic.twitter.com/7SuKumJAUG

Glad everybody is OK.
Many thanks to the Seattle Fire Department! You ROCK!
There was an AMAZING response and quick work. Within minutes there were no less than 8 Fire Trucks and (a number of other Fire Department Vehicles) what I’m assuming were Lieutenants and about 25-30 Firefighters on the scene immediately!
This is the first time I have lived where a fire has taken place and I’m very thankful for the quick response. NO KIDDING! I was shocked (in a good way) at the response and how respectful and friendly they all were.
Again, many thanks!
